I completed couch to 5k in June and have been slowly trying to get to 10k, which I managed last Tuesday, it took me 70mins
I was so chuffed with myself, but yesterday did a Santa fun run of 5k. I normally run on a treadmill at the gym, obviously this was outside, it was in a country park, I hated it, it was like going back to about week 4, I couldn’t get my pace or breathing right, and the mud and hills, god it was awful. I definitely won’t be running outside again.
Now today I am aching like mad,Indisnt ache like this after doing 10k
But I think be positive I raised £200 for 2 charities
But will be sticking to the treadmill from now on. Anyone the same?

I’ve just recently started running outside doing all my c25k on the treadmill and also longer runs after and I agree with you as it is definitely harder and I also was aching for 2 days after. I’ve stuck with outside this morning being my 4th I’m just sticking at 5 k for now and also flatish routes. It’s definitely worth sticking with if it’s something you want to do I agree that’s it’s quite a bit harder than treadmill but I’m finding it easier now and not aching. Congratulations on the charity 5k and also getting outside after all treadmill mill runs because I know how hard it especially the 1st run.
Well, I think you're amazing for doing all that on the treadmill. I did all my running outside thought the treadmill would be a breeze but only managed about 6 minutes and that was going really slowly so I don't know how you manage to keep it going for 70 mins. Kudos !
I too completed the program on a treadmill, I've transitioned to outdoor running, it is wildly different and I bet the backs of your legs are really hurting you at the minute?
That group of muscles will most probably be under-developed with running on a treadmill as these are the muscles that would pull the ground underneath you as you run and not something you need to do a lot of on a treadmill.
When I transitioned to outdoor running it took me 5-6 runs, short to start with and after each one I had a protein shake to help with any aches and to aid muscle development.
I still have one after I've pushed the distance even now.
Well done on your Santa run - that was why I started running in 2018. So much fun. You look great.
I did some of my C25k on the treadmill because of the beast from the east, but I graduated outside. It is different, I agree, but I would never return to the treadmill unless it was icy. I love to feel the breeze on my face, to feel the sun on my skin, and to watch the seasons change making each run completely different.
You say you found it hard but don’t forget you were wearing a Santa outfit too. Much warmer than your normal run gear. I ran on wet grass at a new parkrun a few weeks ago and found it much harder as I mainly run on a promenade but just by taking your time getting used to a new surface and you’ll be fine.
I hope you venture outside again, you get to wave at fellow runners, and children and you can try parkrun ( my favourite run of the week).
Congratulations on your run and raising money!
That is so interesting. I did the opposite last week. I have always run outside. I started with C25K in June and did my first 10k on Saturday. On Thursday because of the weather I went to the gym for a quick 4k.
It was absolutely awful! I really struggled because it was SO hot and airless, nothing to look at and so I found it really boring as well.
We are all so different in what suites us.
Maybe try outside another time but choose a flat scenic route. You may find you get to love the fresh air and change of scenery.
One of the things I didn’t like was seeing how far I had to go, I just put my headphones on with loud rock music and just go, I’m obviously a little bit weird! (She says in her Santa suit)
