First 5K Event

I have completed W9 R1 and managed to get to the 5K mark if I include my warm up and warm down walks. My time is about 42mins. I have my first proper running event on Sunday and I know I can do it physically, even if I am a bit slow and might have to walk a little. The problem is that I’m worried I will get too anxious and my mind will stop me from completing the run. It is a large circuit round a lake and I’m worried that seeing it all stretching out in front of me with loads of other faster, fitter runners will freak me out. I know it shouldn’t but I suspect it will. Any tips for mental strength?

Thank you - you are such a wonderful source of advice and encouragement.

Those faster fitter runners where at the same level as you are now at some stage, so don't worry about them. Go and enjoy yourself and all will be great.

Good luck.

Just stay calm and treat it like any other run. You can do it. Good luck 🤗🤗

I'm also doing the same but 'should' be graduating on Sunday (did W9R2 yesterday) and I am roughly running 5K in 42 mins. All my family are taking part in our local Santa Dash on Sunday and I've said to them to leave me to it (they will all be ahead of me anyway). So I plan to take my headphones and treat it like I would if I was heading out on my own for a run. I will walk the first 5 mins and then run (although I know it will be super muddy as its across fields) for the 30 mins and see where I get to. I suspect I will be slower than perhaps I would on a normal run but I just want to enjoy it. You will be fine, just keep to your pace and run it as if you were doing it on your own. Good luck!

Thank you for your message, it is so good to know there are others in a similar situation. I thought about walking the first 5mins but wasn’t worried about it, probably overthought it! I have asked everyone I know not to come to the event so I don’t have the pressure. Good luck to you, I hope you enjoy it x

You'll be amazing. It's hard to ignore the people going past you, but you're most likely to overtake some others on your way too. 9 weeks ago you wouldn't be able to do this, just think how far you come and enjoy ! 💪🏃‍♀️

Thank you for all your comments, this group of wonderful. I did the 5k and made the beginners error of going off too fast then getting tired. I then had to Jeff it as I couldn’t get my stride or my breath under control. Managed 39mins which for me is fine. Really pleased to have done it - thank you again for your support.
