First Parkrun!

So, after graduating on Thursday, I took part in my first Parkrun this morning! It was certainly a challenge (my local Parkrun is rather hilly!), and I did have to walk a fair bit of it, but I managed to complete it in a smidge over 43 minutes! Not the fastest time by any means, but I'm just so pleased with myself that I managed to get all the way through it!

Congratulations on completing your first 5k Parkrun, well done, also well done on running that only two days after graduating from C25K, it took me 13 MONTHS after graduating until my first parkrun πŸ˜‚o I suppose, better late than never 😊 πŸƒ

Thank you! I think I might need to do a few more consolidation runs now before I attempt another Parkrun - I'd certainly like to be able to try to run the whole course next time! 😊 πŸƒ

Congratulations. Keep with Parkrun, it’s for everyone that’s why there’s always tail walkers. Doesn’t matter how long you take but you will find you gradually get quicker.

Thank you! Yes, I think it's great how inclusive Parkruns are - no minimum speed or ability required, just open to everybody to have a go!

Well done, isn’t it the best. Having to work today, so missing it so much. Now just chip off those seconds. Lol

It's great! Yep, I need to gradually work on improving my pace! :)

The park runs have hills😳, people who walk in front of you, oh legs don’t start walking! πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ. So it’s very different. I’m trying to improve, i’ve Done 7, all different. Next Park Run for me is in London in two weeks. Bring it on.

Good luck with your next Parkrun! :) πŸƒ

Congratulations on laying down your first parkrun time. I approach any event/distance for the first time as a mission to finish, and in doing so setting a PB. Enjoy working on breaking that time.

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply toUnfitNoMore

Yes, my only aim today was to get over the finish line, whether it was running, walking, or crawling! :D

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduateβ€’ in reply tomog7

Maybe we should practice our crawling more, could come in useful one day 🀣

Congratulations again, cheers 🍻

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply toUnfitNoMore

🀣 crawling certainly did feel like an option as I reached the final few yards (my local Parkrun finishes with a big long hill! It's inhumane!)

Thanks! :)

There’s one near me with a brutal uphill for the first km... it’d be great training for yours!!

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply toUnfitNoMore

Ouch! Nothing like easing you gently into the run, eh? :D

That’s fantastic, well done!! I think my first was about the same time. Don’t play it down, it’s amazing and chances are you’ll be doing personal bests each next park runs you do!

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply toCouchpotato2

Thank you! Well, let's hope so! I want to build up my endurance a little bit more before I tackle another Parkrun though - I've been getting a slight niggle with my left knee.. I suspect it's the dreaded IT band, so I'm going to be taking my next few runs a little cautiously as I don't want to end up on the injury couch!

Couchpotato2 profile image
Couchpotato2Graduateβ€’ in reply tomog7

On the nhs website there are knee exercises for runners, i recommend those and anything that strengthens your glutes like the clam. I have a week knee and have to do those. 5’ a day will make a difference.

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply toCouchpotato2

Yep, I've bookmarked the page for those knee exercises. Sounds like they're a really good idea!

Couchpotato2 profile image
Couchpotato2Graduateβ€’ in reply tomog7

They helped my brother get back into running pain free. I also have very cushioned shoes

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply toCouchpotato2

Oh yes, squishy shoes make a huge difference! :)

Congratulations! That's a respectable time AND it's a run not a race so finishing is the aim - and you did that. I'm in Sheffield and we have hills galore - I tell myself they will make me stronger.

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply to5dogs

Yes, it was a Sheffield Parkrun that I took part in.. so there were several inclines to tackle for the course :D I'll keep telling myself the same thing then! :D

Which one did you do - I did Concord

I did Graves, so was cheered on by the ducks as I passed by the ponds! :D

Congratulations on your first parkrun in a respectable time. As the others have pointed out parkrun can be addictive. I run alternate Saturday's and volunteer the weeks I don't run. By volunteer week no 9 I was the Run Director, I now have 20 runs and 20 volunteers to my name and I love it. C25K and by extension parkrun are the best, they create a new freedom and many new friends. If you are getting joint niggles I have found Pilates helps.

mog7 profile image
mog7Graduateβ€’ in reply toLarrykat

Thank you! Wow, that's amazing! Good for you! :) I'd not thought of Pilates before - I should look into that then!

That's true! I'm hoping that the hills will build up my stamina. They'll never be easy, but I'm hoping they will become a bit more doable over time!
