Today I challenged my 15 year old to run 5K with me. He was reluctant to say the least.
So off we went, and within seconds he was yards in front of me. I continued at a steady pace, and as it as a there-and-back route he came past me about quarter of a K ahead... so I guessed he'd probably get to 5k about 10% faster than me.
It was hard (for me) as I'd been resting since my last personal (down-hill) best; and the return slope is a killer.
My boy finished his first 5K in 39:30, and I did mine in 44.20 (which although not a personal best for me was a very good time for an up-hill-return).
So, smug boy was waiting on my car, and seemed very pleased with himself. It seems his reluctuance was simply lack of confidence! (now fully restored!). I've now challenged him to run regularly with (or ahead of!) me and we can hopefully help each other! He has new suit trousers to lose weight for, when we attend a wedding in late September!

Aw, that's lovely! Bet he's feeling really proud of himself. One of the lovely by-products of me doing C25K is that one of my sons (12 years old now) has also completed te programme and regularly whoops my ass at our local Parkrun. His twin brother has now said he wants to give Parkrun a go. I like to think that I'm setting a good example for my kids, despite not being a naturally sporty type!
I know just what you mean... I started my program whilst feeling really 'down' and wanting to challenge myself with something I thought I could NEVER do... and it really has made me a better example in so many ways... I hope that it can spur him on to get fitter... well done for your positive effect on your boys too!
On my first run my then 4 year old daughter who has abounding amounts of energy escorted her poor old mum carrying a bit too much weight! We had a lovely time in fact we didn't want to go home and went for a 1.5k walk afterwards around the pretty country lanes near where we live
