Race for life 5K tomorrow

This is the reason why I started C25K. At the beginning of my journey my dear friend Anne challenged me to either bake cakes or run 5K to raise money for cancer research. She baked the cakes and I got my running shoes on. We decided to raise money as she was fighting cancer and I had lost my dad in law, David to cancer. As many of you know she lost her battle just 6 weeks after she challenged me, a couple of weeks later my cousin, Stephen lost his. It’s going to be tough because it will be hot and I have only managed to run a full 5K once. I can’t thank these two enough for tricking me into this running malarkey, I might be running in memory of them but they got me started in the first place. My fitness and health has improved so much. Thank you Anne and Stephen x

This will be such a special run to remember your loved family and friends - celebrate their lives with every step.

Hmm... a hot weather run - a wet buff might be a good thing if you have one - around your head or even around a wrist as a “mopper”. Best of luck, you’ll be fab. 😄xx

Jullaly profile image
JullalyGraduate in reply to Elfe5

Now that’s a good idea, a wet buff hadn’t thought of that thank you

I also started this with the goal of a race for life, we did ours ladt week and it was fantastic. I was with a group of young ladies and my daughters and granddaughter who all encouraged me along and waited so we all finished together - I was much slower than them, but we did it and it was a wonderful feeling. My daughter had a mastectomy last year and it was a tough time for her but thankfully she is fully recovered and cancer free. We'll go on raising funds and look forward to the next one. It was also for me only about the second time I had run 5k but if I can do it so can you. Good luck and have a fandabidozee day

You have been on a journey oldladyruns, and whatever obstacles have been in your way you have had the determination to carry on. It will be an emotional day for you but your friend and your Dad-in-law would be so proud of what you’ve achieved. Do enjoy wearing pink and sharing your day with others who have shared similar experiences. Don’t forget you don’t have to run it all. Although if it’s on the flat you’ll probably find it really easy after all your hill training.

By the way, you’ll have to change your name. You are younger than me and I certainly don’t feel old, especially now I’m running 3 times a week.

Jullaly profile image

Good luck with your run, and for a very worthy cause. My wife did hers a few weeks ago in memory of my dad and her stepmum both of whom passed away from cancer. Don't worry if you have to walk part of the 5K, it's all about finishing.

I hope you enjoyed it. I did my first Race for Life last Sunday and it was tough going in the heat. I’d only done a few distances of 5 k + so like you was nervous. But most of the ‘ jogging ‘ group walked some of it anyway, as I had to, and it didn’t matter a bit. No one gives you more money for running all the way!
