I'm new here and started today

Well, after lots of pontificating I did my first run today. I have only recently come into the 21st century with a smartphone so downloaded the App yesterday. Last night I got all my running gear out and ready for a 6.30 a.m. first run - at 12.30 I finally got out and started off, listening to Mr Johnson's (Michael, not Boris) encouraging tones. I used to run about 20 years ago (I am now in my early 60s, recently widowed) but in the interim have put on about 4 stone and my evening meal often comprised red wine and a kit kat. I had to push myself and could not believe 60 seconds took so long to pass by, whereas the 90 seconds "rest" went by in a flash. Next run - Saturday morning. Onward and upward....

Good word pontificating, congratulations on completing your first run of C25K, welcome to the forum, remember that you can repeat any runs or week's if you wish to, onwards and upwards to run 2 of week 1. ๐Ÿ˜Š ๐Ÿƒ.

thank you and to all those who have welcomed me. This forum is very encouraging and informative. I live in a village where a lot of people know me so I was initially reluctant to get out on the streets [as it were] but was so glad I did. Within a few minutes of home are farm tracks so once I have got a bit acclimatised to running/walking I hope to get out into the countryside. I did take it easy but have got a bit of a twinge in my knee - I guess this is probable due to being overweight or ... lightbulb moment... I realise I did not stretch

Make sure you have good running trainer, I blamed not running on my knees and then had an expert recommend the right foot ware and I now I donโ€™t have knee problems :)

Akallover profile image
Akalloverโ€ข in reply toleighloss

Yes I think I need to get new trainers. Mine were more used for walking. I will go shopping for some on Saturday. I don't think I want ones that light up though, bit old for that :-)

Lol - you are NEVER too old for flashing trainers!! Happy shopping Saturday!! :)

Who knows BoJo may well become a coach on C25K, he runs, certainly cycles to 'work' maybe.

Welcome along ! Running with Boris could put a whole new twist on this - think Iโ€™ll stick with Sanjeev for the time being ๐Ÿ˜„ Take it slow and steady, and enjoy the journey x

Thank you. I am aiming to get out in the early morning as the cats wake me up early anyway so I may as well hit the road. I also like it when it is fresh and quiet outside. One query - should I have a bite to eat before I go out? or leave until my return. Michael Johnson told me today to have a drink and a snack so I had a cup of tea and a 2-finger kit-kat. Not quite sure that was the best thing to eat though :-)

Most of my runs are done 3pm ish after work. I do Parkrun on Saturday morning 9 am start. So coffee and a light biscuit at 7 nice breakfast + banana when home. Eat enough that youโ€™re not hungry but not so much itโ€™s wobbling around heavy in the tummy. Trial and error do what works for you. Happy running x ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Always here x

Hello Akallover, so sorry to hear of your bereavement but a big welcome to C25K and the forum! Youโ€™ll find loads of support and help here. Read Iannoda Truffeโ€™s pinned post for newbies, which is essential reading. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated, take your running slow slow really slow! I try and go out in the morning as well and usually just have a small cup of green tea or water and half a banana (I eat the rest when I get back and save the kitkat for a treat later in the day!). Enjoy your C25K trip and let us know how you get on!

Akalloverโ€ข in reply toOldgirlruns

Thank you, Oldgirlruns, for your kind words and also the tips about what to eat. I will go shopping tomorrow and stock up on bananas. I do drink a lot of water during the day but did not take any with me so will make sure I do on Saturday as I was parched when I finished today. I will keep you posted on Run 2 :-)

I wouldnโ€™t worry about taking water on your runs with C25K- the general consensus is that provided you keep reasonably well hydrated you shouldnโ€™t need anything while youโ€™re doing the runs.

Welcome and congratulations! It's such a great journey and you've found a fantastic community here. There are people here who are at the same point as you, you can support and motivate each other. And there are people here who have graduated, who know what it's like, and we all want to see/help you graduate and celebrate your achievements!

So good luck! let us know how it's going. There's information in the Pinned Posts... things like ๐Ÿ‘‰ healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

But if you have any questions... Just ask! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

Welcome. I hope it changes your life, as it did mine, and so many others. You have done the hardest run, the first one off the couch. The rest may be physically challenging - I could only do 2 of the 60 second runs in week 1, so I did it over the next week - but the first step is the hardest. Us older villagers have to inspire the merely middle aged!

Prayers, and many blessings on your running.

Welcome and congratulations. Getting out the door for that first run is by far the hardest. I'm glad you stuck with Michael. I'm trying to imagine BoJo... no, can't do it. Keep us updated on your progress.

Welcome Akallover, from another new starter and fellow early morning runner! I did W1R2 this morning, and enjoyed it a lot more than W1R1, having listened to wise folk here who gently suggested I take it a bit slower.

Enjoy your journey, look forward to encouraging each other along the way. We can do it ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ’ช

Thanks. Yes I am looking forward to Run 2 because I now know what to expect. We can do it and we will - I think it is due to rain Saturday but I don't mind that; I finished today's run looking like a red-faced monkey due to the heat (and possibly last night's wine but hey ho, lesson learned). As you say, we can do it .. and we will to it :-)
