Was so disappointed in myself yesterday and finding it really difficult not to be hard on myself. Was due to do week 6 run 3, the first 25 minute run but about 16 minutes in, I had to give up. My calves were so tight and I was finding it so hard to do. Absolutely gutted as this is the first run since the beginning that I haven’t been able to finish :( any tips for tight calves? I can still feel it today.

Hey Habley. I’ll leave others to talk about the rollers as I know nothing about them! Were you hydrated enough? That could have been a part of the reason.

The other thing you could try while resolving this issue is learning the Japanese slow jogging technique. It’s a low impact style of running designed to avoid injury. Very useful runner’s tool I think for after a break or injury, or just to help you finish a run you’re struggling with. I run this way all the time, just because I love it, and can run & run - and it makes the running pleasurable! I first saw this in w6 and it really helped me as the durations increased. There are a few parts of it - particularly the soft jumping landing, short stride bit so worth watching a few times to catch it all.

Hope this helps!

Are you upping your rest day stamina and strength exercise.. and getting plenty of stretching in there... So necessary for the longer runs:)

Hydration is important in the warmer weather too... all the time not just on run days... Warming up well and making sure you are landing lightly..kissing the ground with your feet:)

Massage those calves well, and many of us find a massage stick really great for tight calves:)

I used to suffer from tight calves, it went away when I got some decent trainers (not specialist running ones).
