Brand new runner

Just completed W1, have not done any running since school and I have recently turned 50. Worried about starting W2 as I get a burning, tight feeling in my calves during each 60 second run. Don’t want to give up though as enjoying the fresh air! Anyone had anything similar?

Congratulations on starting C25K with week 1 and welcome to the forum, just take all the runs slowly, you can repeat any runs or week's if you wish to.

Hi and well done on a great start to your running journey! I get tight calves too and I have found stretching before and after a run really helps. Also speed is important, the slower the better!! Happy running 😎😁👍

Welcome ! Take it slow and steady. If it hurts, slow down again. The NHS Strength and Flex podcasts are great for rest days. Enjoy the journey x

Well done starting. Looking back at my posts I described my legs as “hot lead”! So much good advice on here. Also I do yoga on days between runs. For me it certainly has got better!

Good luck!!

That's a great description! Exactly how my legs feel. Have just started a barre class as well so hopefully that will help stretch those muscles.

Congratulations on starting C25K 👍🏻

I’ve got a sore calf at present, been trying to stretch and massage it, & feel it’s getting better, I’m also trying to run as slowly as I can so it seems it’s a common issue experienced by lots of new runners (and possibly experienced ones), presumably as we adjust 🤗 x

Hi Brand new runner ! I felt exactly like you, I am 58 and unfit. I am now about to start wk8 and loving it. If I could offer any advice it is to drink plenty, do additional warm up and cool down stretches and go SLOW, slow, slow - good luck and enjoy the journey x

Lots of useful tips from people here, as expected on this forum!, - I’d only add remember to keep well hydrated all the time which will help. Good luck!
