Running with a dog, any tips ?

I’ve only just started and hoping to do my second run tomorrow but I’m also hoping to incorporate it with giving my cavapoo exercise. I’m short on time with 3 kids and don’t think I’ll have time or motivation to go out again to walk him after a run. Off the lead is easy - I mean for places where he has to be on the lead. Thanks.

I will Link In Maddee_6333 as she does a lot of Canicross with her dog and will have some good starting tips.

Have a look at her profile she has quite a bit of information in her posts.

I often do my runs as part of a dog walk, it’s an excellent plan.

Barest minimum you need would be a bungee lead of some kind - which will help avoid injury to you or your dog - and a harness (not one that sits straight across their chest) - for your dog to avoid injury to their neck. A waist belt of some kind is also helpful. It doesn’t have to be a proper Canicross belt if you’re just starting out/your dog isn’t likely to pull very hard, but it will leave you both hands free.

It’s also a good plan to start teaching your dog things like left, right and ‘leave it’ if they don’t already know it 👍

I assumed your dog is not a puppy, puppies shouldn’t be running as ‘work’ before they’re at least 10 months old.

And, of course, be careful of the heat.

Hope you both enjoy C25K 👍

Hi thanks for the advice. No he’s 18mo this old. And although I started last week on R1W1 I’ve only just managed to do my second this morning. Struggling with the whole time thing. He was really good today running and walking . Although I think my slow pace isn’t either a run or walk pace for him so he was a little confused 😂😂🙄! I’ll jeep on trying.
