Just completed week 2, run 1 and to say I am in agony is an understatement!! The front of both my thighs are very painful...anyone else experienced this? Is my technique wrong? Can I do anything to make it better? Rest day tomorrow but the thought of experiencing this pain again is a bit offputting - help!!!! X

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.
This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and includes advice on minimising impact and stretching after every run, which may help.
Enjoy your journey.
Hi, kel110: I've been having that identical problem since completing one of the Week 2 runs three weeks ago. The pain gets particularly bad when I try to do stairs or drag myself up from a sitting position. It never bothers me when I'm running, though, so I've kept up with the program anyway. I ran W5R3 last night, and while I'm still having that strange thigh pain, it does seem to be getting somewhat better as time goes on. Should I still be running in this condition? Maybe not, but I've signed up for an actual 5K on April 27 and really hate to quit now just when I'm getting in shape otherwise! Call me crazy, call me nuts---
Slowing down just a little helps with most things. You’re demanding a lot of new stuff from your body; it’s bound to complain a bit at first !
This is normal... your body is wondering what the heck is going on. We expect normal aches and pains... real deep seated pain is not the same. This is why we recommend non impact exercise on rest days.
I am on Week 6 Run 2 and i also have been experiencing pain throughout my body afterwards and ongoing until the next run. During the run theres no pain (unless I block it out). I feel like an old woman dragging myself round and particularly my knees pain getting up from sitting. It makes me wonder if i shouldnt have embarked on this at my age
I had a gait analysis yesterday to make sure I was using right trainers as previously I've always had bad knees. The man doing it said how important it was to keep your foot pointing forwards if your feet are turning outwards even slightly the impact on your knees is incredible. Also are your trainers running trainers? Are they cushioning the impact? So.. maybe just look down at your feet as you run and see if you can keep them pointing forwards. Good luck. I'm 48 and I'm giving it a go.
Thank you for this. My trainers are just ordinary trainers. I know this is a bit counter productive but i was waiting until almost the end before i go get the gait analysis and purchase proper running shoes. I have a history of starting things but giving up, so i didnt want to waste money if the same pattern happened again.
I know I can't believe that I have just bought mine when I had only done 1 run. Today I did my second run in my new trainers and due to cushioning it really was quite enjoyable. I think the sun shining helped as well. I'm trying to convince myself I can't give up now as I've just bought my trainers!!
I suffered from terrible aches during the first few weeks, too. As has been said above, it's your muscles being woken up and learning to run. I found hot baths and some gentle exercise was the most helpful (gentle walking or swimming). The great news is that this went away completely by about week 4 or 5. Then I got a whole load of different aches, but that's another story. I do find that running still makes me a little uncomfortable but it's absolutely worth the discomfort!
All the very best with your journey through the programme!
Sretching after the run essential
And also stretch before and after your run it helps 😉
And make sure you hydrate every day lots of water but not to much I drink about 2-3litres a day
Thanks everyone - lots of sound advice!! Will make sure I'm a bit more prepared tomorrow 😉
You’re welcome I’m new to this to but being on here helps me more than I thought it would and lots of nice people on here 😉
Hi everyone.... Went for run...the walking parts were more painful than the running parts but the good news - only took a couple of hours for pain to subside whereas last time it was a couple of days!!! Off in W2R3 in an hour or so....thank you all for your kind advice 😍😍
