So I’m onto week 7 on my runs this week... I’m getting to the point where I feel I need to zone out more during these longer runs, rather than relying on the time updates and then staggering onto the next point.
Does anyone else listen to podcasts whilst running? Was wondering whether listening to conversation, rather than music, will help me lose track of time or can’t tell if upbeat music is the key to keeping going?

I listen to to Ricky Gervais Podcasts and Adam Buxton Podcasts. But some times I almost have to stop from laughing 😂. Definitely takes your mind off the run.
I use a mix of music ( I put together runlists of favourite music & swap them about when I need a change). Also podcasts from radio 4. Desert island discs is great- SO many to choose from, also The Food program. 😃
I like listening to the Desert Island Discs Podcasts. They are all about 40 minutes long which is perfect for the warm up, run and warm down. There are thousands to choose from so you can always find someone you are interested in. I find my self lost in the conversation. The music is shorter than on the programmes when aired so it doesn’t matter what they play.
I've tried listening to music but I end up running faster. Tried a podcast but kept missing bits so I tried Audible. This works for me as the Audible app automatically pauses when Sarah talks then carries on when she's gone. Listening to one of my favourite book series on it so I don't notice the running until the last couple of minutes when my legs are tired.
Typically for me it’s upbeat music. When I’m really tired I pretend I’m in my younger days in the club dancing to a song I love... keeps me going song to song.
Sometimes I run on a treadmill. Im that case I have the tv on in front of me and I like to watch action based stuff... if somebody is running around effortlessly trying to save the world it keeps me going haha
I’d love to be grown up enough (and fit enough) to get to the podcast stage!
Another vote for Desert Island Discs! I’ve also listened to a Radio 5live podcast called End of Days which was fascinating. I prefer speech to music to stop me running to a different pace to my own!
Thanks for your recommendations... very tempted to try desert island discs... although a friend recommended a podcast called ‘my dad wrote a porno’ must say I may try that first 😂
I haven't listened to anything other music so far, I need the rhythm to keep me going. Not tried podcast or audiobook yet, though plenty on this forum do and clearly are successful with that!
I like listening to audiobooks and podcasts whilst running. You find yourself getting so lost in the conversation and/or plot that you sometimes forget you are running! Also, the curiosity to find out what happens next in the story or discussion can be motivation to get you out on your next run.
I listen to No Such Thing as a Fish, 99% Invisible and Freakonomics Radio podcasts. But got a sprained ankle so sitting this one out today. Hopefully will be able to run on it again tomorrow as now training for a 10k!
I find that some music throws me off stride since I automatically start running to the beat and wind up going faster than I probably should as a (much older) newbie. On the other hand, I do love the music on its own, and I don't want to give up listening to Laura!
I’m glad you asked that as I’ve been feeling the same on the longer runs (started W8 today). As I’ve always listened to music I’m a bit apprehensive about changing to a podcast in case I can’t run with it!! I don’t know how people do ‘naked runs’, in the gaps between songs I hate hearing my heavy breathing!! 😂 I have to say that music keeps me going. Be interesting to hear how you get on with a podcast. 😊
