Not sure if this is confessional, seeking support, or just cathartic, but here goes.
10 years ago I had 2 years weekly physio on my lower back, apparently a hyper mobile back, i’d discovered (after an Orlando holiday) I cudnt stand for more then 30 mins without the equivalent of annoying toothache in my lower back, long story physio fixed it, but every now and again I’d tweek it, on two occasions it’s caused sciatica but I can go a year without aggravating it and all is good, and never lasts more than a few days.
I had a very long sleep-in today, glands are up on the back of my neck, think I’ve been fighting something all week, and was knackered, but got up for my run, my back was a little achy, anyhow started the run and back was sore and I felt shattered, defo fighting something.
I managed 5min walk, 10 min run, 3 min walk but only 8 min run then stopped, I think the combo of slight sore back and potential cold or similar has caused this. Can’t believe how disappointed I feel right now, in a way it’s probably good I’m this annoyed as it tells me I’m motivated to do this, still disappointed tho.
Purge over 😄👍

Thanks, yes I think your right, I went, when in reality I wasn’t feeling up to it, the old me would’ve stayed in bed. I’ll have a look at that McKenzie back first aid, I think next I need to work on my core a bit more as that is likely to help too. Currently slurping a hot lemon 👍🙂
No need to be disappointed Jurgen77, well done you for trying. Onwards and upwards as the saying goes. These set backs can only make you stronger if you keep going. Best of luck for your next run.
You said, “The old me would’ve stayed in bed.” - The new you will learn from experiences like this when “you should’ve stayed in bed & not run!” - Lots of sympathy. I made the same mistake on my graduation run - it was a revolting experience! 😂 I know to wait and run when I am better now, however frustrating it might be it.😄
You make a very good point there, I’ve learned a lesson, my back has stiffened up since so I reckon I’ll be out of action for a few days until it eases
It’s amazing to watch how the success threshold rises with fitness. You did 21 minutes of cardio... there’s no failure there at all. You’re not feeling great, your back is playing up, and you’re tired... I’d say 21 minutes under those conditions is a huge victory. Be proud of yourself... there’s no rush to complete this plan... no prizes for doing it in a set number of attempts... there’s just one prize... a fitter, healthier, happier you. Today’s run was another step towards that prize. Maybe take an extra rest day as you’re ill and come at this one again with fresher legs.
Thanks, I’d not thought of it like that, I’ve been scientifically sticking to the regime, I think now I’ll take a few days to let my back get back to normal then probably repeat week 6. 👍😄
I think doing what you did is amazing... think of where you were to where you are now. But I think one of the lessons we have to learn is when to rest and not run. I may be on the injury bench myself this week as my calf started twinging this morning... if it's not pain-free by Tuesday then I'll have to miss my next run.
Sorry to hear that, my calf was always a problem when I played football, but had been fine during the runs, my back has stiffened considerably today, in hind sight I should’ve stopped as I think this could be a two week break from everything now as can’t fully straighten up, just hope I don’t lose too much momentum, I’ll probably repeat week5
I am very healthy but found that some days I just can’t do it. I think it is normal to have off days. One of my last week run was 1.6km only and that was because by the time I did 900 metres, I decided “ bugger this, I am going home for breakfast” I turn around and went home. I think you did very well. My advice to you is of you have back problems maybe run on lawn or sand instead of asphalt or concrete path. It will be better for you back
That’s good to know, I’ve only been using treadmills and have to admit it is a bit of concern for when I do get outside, although the park run I’m looking is on sand, grass and asphalt, long term I have to improve my core to protect my back, I’ve always known that as countless physios have advised it, once fixed this time I’ll be doing core exercises. 👍
