Anybody else putting weight on? Almost completed week 3 and have now taken measurements as trying to lose weight following healthy eating but putting on instead I’ve never run before and trying not to let it put me off 😩

That is a medical issue regarding putting ON weight when you are exercising and following healthy eating, it does happen, only a medical expert can tell you exactly why.

It's something to do with 'fat' being distributed around the body, some people can exercise and run 10K races and not lose weight, see a medical expert for professional advice.

The amount of running you are doing is not enough to lose weight. If you ran for 30 minutes solid it's only about 300 calories. So by week 9 your 3runs a week will help. But unfortunately the exercise you are doing will make you feel hungry and you probably feel you can eat a tad more. Carry on with the healthy eating, try to reduce your calorie intake and you will start to see weight loss eventually. Enjoy your running

Thanks I’ll keep at it as I want to improve my general fitness ... yes I have been hungrier may need to review what I have to eat immediately after as I go gym just before lunch.

There is only one way to lose weight. Take in less calories than you expend.

And if you are actually adding to your calorie expenditure, then you must lose weight, unless you are eating more.

However, in the early days of adding exercise you will be building muscles, and muscles are heavier than fat, so maybe you are in the fat-redistribution phase. Week 3 is pretty early in the programme.

As AlMorr says, it wouldn't hurt to get a medical opinion though.

Good luck, and welcome to the Runners.

Muscle weighs more than fat, so at first, as you turn fat into muscle, you’ll get heavier. Happily, muscle also burns calories quicker than fat, so providing you follow a sensible healthy eating plan, you’ll reach a tipping point and start to lose. Don’t despair ! Relax and enjoy your journey x

Try using an app like MyFitnessPal to log your calories intake against a desired calorie intake for weight loss. I’ve found it an excellent help for me and it has a bar code reader to make it easier to log. Keep going!

I was just going to suggest this myself. Sometimes eating healthy is still too many calories

This happened to me: I now realise, as I’m into my second month of consolidation after graduation, that I don’t feel the need to eat EVERYTHING after a run as it’s more if a familiar part of my routine. Also my expenditure is starting to be enough to make a difference: I am now starting to lose but only on weeks where I am properly on plan. Keep going: you will notice the change in your fitness sooner, and that has huge health benefits x

So far, you've not done enough running to significantly build muscle or lose weight. That's the harsh reality for many of us, myself included. And unfortunately this exercise malarkey can make us feel hungrier than usual :(

Just for the record, a kilo of muscle weighs the same as a kilo of fat. It is true though that muscle is denser than fat so that might make you look/feel slimmer...

I’m attending Weight Watchers as I put on a little bit of weight last year when I had a back injury and was not running. I find it good for education about food. I’m sticking to plan and running 5K 3 times per week and have lost 20 lbs so far. I have 14 lbs to go to hit goal and I am on track.

It is very easy to think you are eating healthy choice foods. Companies market healthy options all the time which are anything but low fat. A sandwich from a Deli or prepackaged in a shop could be your full daily calorie allowance. It’s scary really. I too thought I was eating healthy but slowly weight was going on. I fluctuated by 1 stone during the summer and winter. But I’m on a mission now to get to a healthy BMI and keep running.

Thanks for your helpful responses everyone, I’m following slimming world so calorie counting is not encouraged so it’s easy to overdo portions 😊 I am Going to make a conscious effort to cut down on the post exercise feeds 😊
