Did my first run today! Feel great that I did it but I’ve got a long way to go... anyone else felt like they couldn’t breathe properly...

Thought the first run would kill me! Well done for starting - it’s the hardest part. You’re probably running too fast, that’s what turned it around for me, learning to run slowly - smaller strides, and just slowing right down. Your running can be slower than your brisk walk, so if you master that change it will help your breathing enormously.

Yes I was like that, only on week 5 now but already my breathing has calmed. Slowing helps and also your body will get used to running and it’ll slowly become easier

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and includes advice on breathing.

Enjoy your journey.

Well done for getting started! You will not believe how fast the weeks pass and how quickly your fitness level improves. Stick with the programme, have belief in yourself and share your successes here. You're in the right place and we are glad you are here. :)

Great job. It wasn’t so much that I couldn’t breathe properly in W1R1... it was more each run was trying to kill me, an invisible hand over my mouth and nose, burning in the legs... I really felt I was in danger of waking up in an ambulance... or worse! Run two was much better... I slowed down! Try getting into that conversational pace and enjoy run 2... you can do this.

Yes!! Literally just got in from my first run and had the exact same - you’re not alone!

Great to be encouraged too by these replies 😊 x

Absolutely! The best advice I was given was to not even think about breathing & it would sort itself out. I did & it did! 😀 Just go slowly ( walking pace slow is fine) & it will sort itself as long as you are not going too fast. 😃

Breath from your tummy / stomach not chest and go slower
