Thinking caps on please.

We are going to be coming up with a glossary of running terms for the forum. I get as far as IC (injury Couch, someone who can not run due to an injury) and then my mind goes blank, so please help me out with coming up with some others and explanations.

Many thanks in advance

Not a running term, but definitely a HU term... VRB's (Virtual Running Buddies)

Gait analysis...the way you make sure you have the correct supportive footwear for YOU. Checked in a proper running shop by running on their treadmill and having your gait (footfall) filmed. Proper advice then given...

Ha, Dynamic and static stretching.

Dynamic...while moving like lunges, donkey kicks, leg swings and arm circles... Before a run

Static... after warm down walk standing still or sitting/lying down Hamstring, quads, calves..shoulders, glutes etc.

Better explanations maybe😉xx

.... Oh, and please explain that C25K doesn't mean C25K (except for the talented minority), it means zero minutes running to 30 minutes running - distance is irrelevant

ktsok profile image
ktsokGraduate in reply toTartancat

Yes, that’s a good one. How many posts do we see about people worrying they aren’t going to get to 5k in 30 minutes... or killing themselves maintaining a 6’ km pace in the early weeks (🙄)...

Tartancat profile image
TartancatGraduate in reply toktsok

I still can't do 5k in 30 minutes, but who cares? Just thrilled I can run!

And I loved your reply of Fartleks - it's a brilliant word, always makes me think of being jet-propelled!

It’s a brilliant word. I can’t remember who it is who keeps saying ‘fartleaks’ 😂

Man of us do because it's what autocorrect comes up with in place of fartleks. Either way, it's an awesome word x

New here but have followed the posts for a good while now - can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear that IC means Injury Couch and not Intensive Care as I originally believed. Silly me ...

I thought exactly the same at first - I wondered why everyone was being so melodramatic!

NRC = Nike Run Club App, I remember seeing that and wondering what it meant.

You could add Strava, MapMyRun, and other apps people use to track routes/distance/pace?

Pace: how many minutes it takes to run 1km (sometimes 1mile). Example: a pace of 6 minutes means it takes 6 minutes to run one kilometre. If we run at a consistent speed, then it will take 30 minutes to run 5km at a 6minute pace. A higher number means that we are running more slowly.

Base layer - warm, wicking clothing worn next to the skin in cold weather. Very pertinent at the minute!

Cross training - Cycling, swimming, walking, weights, rowing, yoga, Pilates, any low impact exercise you can do on rest days.

Strengthening exercises - can be for any part of the body that perhaps is weak or needs building up from injury. You could add a link to the NHS recommended ones.

Jogette - the first tentative gentle run back after absence usually having lost one's mojo 😏

I'm sure there are loads more! Will have a think.

NIBLOPUF: New impulse to buy lycra and other previously unconsidered fabrics.

Smugfast: The smug feeling you get tucking into a hearty breakfast knowing you have already been out for a run.

Runrithmetic: The mental calculations you do to think about how long it is to your next walk break and whether that is less time than you have run already.

Onthespotting: The exercise you do by the side of the road, waiting for the traffic to move so you can cross.

Has anyone mentioned running fashion? The art of wearing all shiny, patterned, clashing things at once. It’s a statement.
