Weight loss: Do people find they lose weight... - Couch to 5K
Weight loss
Not much just with the programme: you need to eat healthily too. The three rules of weight loss are eat less; eat better; move more. This helps with the “move more”.
There are many people who lose significant weight while doing C25K, especially in combination with a calorie control plan, such as myfitnesspal.
C25K is not, in itself, a weight loss programme but you will tone up and be fitter and healthier.
In general weight loss requires a change in nutrition. Running may in itself cause people to eat differently and become more nutritionally aware, so sometimes people lose weight running without consciously changing things, but I think they’re rare.
I have and also eat 1500 calories per day . My body shape has also changed , you just cant eat loads because your running you got to work along with it hope this helps
I've lost a few pounds (not many), but I have lost a couple of inches on all the core measurements. Also there's the other point of muscle weighing more than fat, so as you build muscle and lose fat, your weight can stay the same (or even go up slightly). But if you measure yourself (under bust & thigh too) and have a pair of jeans you can't get into - that should be encouragment to keep you going. Doing C25K is 'part' of my weight loss plan. Building muscle, strength and stamina. I'm eating healthily but have not started a calorie control plan - mostly because dieting is what's made me fat! I want to sort my weight problem permanently, and I think becoming a runner and making (very) slow and steady progress is the key. I'm about to graduate (tomorrow on my 53rd birthday) but I'm hoping for 2 stone by the end of the year but happy if that's one stone - if I've exercised it off rather than more yo yo dieting.
The point is that as you build more muscle your metabolism does slowly shift, and you burn more calories even while resting, than when you are unfit. The older you get the more muscle you lose (if you're not using then), and dieting when without exercise (I have learned from hard experience) you lose muscle rather than fat as it's easier for the body than burning fat (unless you're doing a ketosis diet).
I read on the forum yesterday that when you've completed the course (can't remember or find exact figure) but it's under 9 hours of running time. Which is amazing to have done, but also not that much in the grand scheme of things, but if we continue to run 3 times a week for 30 minutes - that makes 78 hours of running over the year - and that will shift some weight but at maybe a 1lb or 2 per month. Then if you add in some other exercise and some healthy dietary changes (moving from processed food to home cooked, eliminating most sugar, more veg to fill you up, lowering your carbs) that should also, while running, shift another 1lb or 2 per month. But having slowly dieted myself up 3 stone over the years - I'm going for a slower two year fitness plan - and end up stronger and leaner.
Also when you're an old bird like me, menopause can hit you with a slower metabolism, muscle loss, as well as the hot flushes! For me running is also to counteract that - and help with bone density and help prevent osteoporosis - and so I will enter my later 50s I much better shape. I have to say I feel SO much better then when I started - I feel trimmer and although it's not enough for most people to notice yet - I see it, and feel it. But I am focused on slow and steady - this is not a quick fix - but I'd really encourage you to do it!
Good luck x
