First run with the husband (probably the last too)

He’s been running for decades and I started running this year in secret! I didn’t tell him till I’d done week 6 last summer. Anyway he wasn’t massively impressed so I ran alone. I restarted the programme end of October once the leg break had healed (although it still hurts a fair bit 😱) and the other day decided to brave running outside again. I’m so scared of falling so have only been going to the gym to do them. I asked him to come with me to check the roads etc as we crossed and just for confidence. Don’t talk to me and don’t go ahead were the rules

Well!!

I ran along with all my energy and stamina for 20 mins and he stayed beside me all the time. Doing a few little jog steps but mainly a moderate walk 😂😂😂 I felt crushed. There I was thinking I was running and really it’s barely more than a walk!!! Oh well. I hope the intention counts as effort!!

My legs just don’t seem to do a long pace?

I looked like a tomato at the end - as he set off for an hours run on his own (after his nice warm up walk!!)

You are brave! I won’t be running with the other half. (Though it’s a different game in the pool!)

I keep coming in the last 5-10% of the Parkrunners. But it isn't about speed, or winning a race, or keeping up with someone else. It's about winning your own battle with the Brain-says-I-can't. And you won that one.

On pain, after a bone injury - the sensation is the way the right chemicals get to the right site of the repair. The advice I have had is to bear the pain, because it will speed repair.

We'll go faster next year.

Happy New Year.

Yep, if I want to feel inadequate I have people I can run with and compare myself to... and if they need that same fix, they can go run with Mo Farah! I will and have run with my ultramarathon running mate, and yes he was well within himself in speed and distance, but I felt no need to compare... just to have a chat together while running and a pint or three after.

You’ve not been doing this long and he has... you’ll gain speed over time and force him into jog and then you can have many nice runs together.

It’s all about you. You didn’t run at all this time last year... and now you’re much faster than that person and can run much further... you’re a better running you. This time next year you’ll be better than that. Gender, age and genetics, amongst other things will determine your absolute best pace and endurance levels... and that’s all you should ever aspire to. You’re amazing and you’ve changed your life... that’s what counts.

Happy running.

My offspring were giving me a hard time over my inability to figure out my new cell phone over Christmas.

I finally got fed up and asked them how they got on on a recent trip to California knowing full we it was a litany of lost luggage, overbooked hotel and calamity of calamities - could not get tickets for some concert.

That's when I told them what I did in California last year - a successful"Runaway Retrieval" that involved going into one of the worst LA ghettos, locating and then abstracting a totally drug-impaired and abused 19 year old who was being pimped out by the local gang and getting myself and her to a secure place while said gang were actively out for my blood for depriving them of an "asset" while also causing them "disrespect"

My kids fixed up my phone in silence :)

I am a "crap" Runner - but both you and I run, and both you and I can do things "great" runners and phone adapts cannot.

You run for you - you're worth it. :)

Happy New Year with many happy miles for you :)

We all have our knack in life - your husband's is fast running, my kids is high tech (and driving me nuts lol) and I bet everything you too do something superlatively :)

Glad you are running with us - we are all in this together :)

The speed walker was going faster than me at our Parkrun this week :)

If you are running you are running......if you are walking you are walking.

Some people can walk faster than they run.

This is why we advise against comparison.

You still have all the health benefits of running even if you are slow compared to someone else.

This study suggests that running slowly is better for you health than running fast womensrunning.com/2016/07/i...

Show that to your other half.

Happy New Year.

Excellent. Ammunition. Thank you. To be fair he has been encouraged. I just found it disheartening that he was only able to do a few jogs then walk so as to not go in front of me!! But yes. I was running! ⛹🏼‍♂️

I run slow. .when Sanjeev says u can slow down if struggling I laugh to myself, as that would be walking. But I am lapping the me that was sitting on the couch 8 weeks ago ! Well done..you are doing it for you.

My partner doesn't know I am running as I want to be able to motivate myself and not be nagged by him into running! He's not a runner but would think he's being helpful !

I’m also running in secret due to not wanting to feel too humiliated too soon and get put off

I stopped running 10 years ago - so this feels like a big deal

I’m on week 3 and it feels like hard work

MelsieJay profile image
MelsieJayGraduate in reply toFMS50

Ahh well done. It IS hard work. That’s what makes it so good that you’re achieving it x
