What is Your Week? December 1st to 8th...

Good morning everyone...

It is December... and here I am, ready once more, to bring us all together, in the What is Your Week chat.

I can hardly believe that we are in December and that Winter is upon us!

The darker days are established...the weather, seemingly unable to decide which way to turn. Over the last couple of weeks, we have had, here, just two days of frost, glorious sunshine, torrential rain and strong winds. The daffodils are beginning to poke their green spikes skyward, yet the last roses of Summer are still clinging to their stems!

But, as ever, whatever the weather, we are able, hopefully, to still find the right time and the opportunity to complete our runs.

With numbers increasing, it is great, to have a little fun post, so we can see who is on which week of the programme, and hopefully it will help everyone to feel more included on the forum.

We can support, encourage and generally help each other, in a positive and friendly way, with no thought of comparison.

Please remember it doesn't matter if you stay on the same week for a while, that is fine; it is a journey and it really doesn't matter how long it takes, it will be so worth it when you get to the final run.

If you have just graduated, also, this will be a great place to keep you motivated, and there is always the Quest on the Bridge to 10k forum also, for Graduates.

So, come and join the fun.... Let us know how it is going :)

Im on week 6. I was doing my runs in the playing field, and now that it's dark in the evening I haven't much enjoyed running on the pavement with traffic, wet leaves and poor street lighting, as well as the weather, so I've only managed 2 a week recently.

Week 5R3 on Monday. I’m retired so I can still use the park. I’m trying not to dwell on the 20 minutes run bit. It’s a busy time though so I’ve only managed 2 per week. Come a long way though. I ran with the dog yesterday, she was surprised.

Gerdakay profile image
Gerdakay in reply to Erddig

Haha. My dog died last year. My husband tried running with her but gave up because she insisted on running across in front of him! Competitive?

I was totally amazed at how achievable 20 mins was!

Frustrated postponed graduation run! Two weeks ago the weather was fine and I planned to graduate at my inaugural Parkrun, then injury and a two week break. Restarted week 9 this week and woke up this morning to pouring rain and a me with a heavy cold grrrrr! The best laid plans and all that. Oh well, I'll do my graduation run quietly during the week and save Parkrun for another time ☹️

Morning, I'm currently on Wk 8... R1went well on Monday.

Thursday was rather stormy but I attempted R2 anyway... Boy I Struggled! Running towards the wind literally took my breath away, it really was an eye opener, and I felt like it was W1R1 all over again. I ended up walking half of it,but did manage to run the last 14 minutes which was great. Did R2 again at 4.30am this morning (yes really lol) and got through it. So I'm behind in my normal routine, as Mon I'd be starting a new week, but it's not to be this time.

It's highlighted how much I've missed my running routine, and how much I'm enjoying this running malarkey👍

Oh and I LOVE running in the rain ☔.... Reminds me of how lucky I am to be alive 😁

Thank you. Slow but steady!

I’ve just completed Week 7 Run 2 and loving it. Also signed up to Run up to Christmas but I don’t think I’ll run every day, will keep with the programme and have a rest day in between and try and reach my 50K target. I think as I add on the extra three mins in week 8 and 5 in week 9 I should get there. Hopefully.

Doing it your way and enjoying...that is what it is all about!

I’m starting W8 on Monday. I had the lurgy a few weeks back which meant I didn’t run for 6 days but I just started back where I left off and managed ok. Feel like the finishing line is almost in sight and achievable. Storm Diana gave me a few challenges this week but didn’t hold me back.

Technically week 7 but have already run for 30 mins as run leader likes to mix things up a bit. Missed a couple of runs as I have been ill or hubby has. Too many bugs going round when you have kids. Running with a cold isn’t fun. Just taking it slow and trying to remember I was enjoying it when I was fully fit x

Dear Oldfloss, I have stopped running. All I do is walk our dog .8 mi/day. It is all I seem to be able to do: cooking/cleaning/animal caregiving, and the rest you know about.... I'm not sure I know how to start up again or whether I have the energy to do so.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to LiisaM

Oh my goodness... I was going to PM you today!!!

This is a worry...:( Is there any chance you could run for part of the time when you take the dog out?

You could just start C25K again... many of us have done so... there is no pressure, and you know what is to come... :)

Alternatively, and I don't suggest this lightly.. what about a cross trainer/treadmill ( second hand maybe) at home...is there any chance of that ?

I so wish I could be of more help to you...xx

LiisaM profile image
LiisaMGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Dear Oldfloss, the fact that you are HERE is a GREAT help. I have both a cross trainer (in my living room!) AND a treadmill (in my basement,) BUT 1) my basement has radon in it and I hate to exercise down there. I have no where to put it upstairs--the house is too full! AND 2) the living room is really too hot to exercise on the cross trainer.... I could open a door in the basement leading to the outside to let the radon out, but that would increase my heating bill since it's nearly winter here. I know I sound like a complainer, but my home is stressful and I want to enjoy(!) running.... This morning when I walked the dog, it was SO awesome--it was quiet, no one else was out, and we had beautiful fog here with little drops of water hanging from the trees and bushes.... However, the dog walks .003 mph because he wants to smell EVERYthing.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to LiisaM

This is not good...somehow we need to get you out there..somehow we need to use dog!... long lead...running harness..?..

Is there no one who could spell You???

LiisaM profile image
LiisaMGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Oh, I had an expandable leash for the dog and I will get another one; they allow you to walk more quickly and the dog can stop and sniff but run to catch up--and so on, but my silly dog bit it and broke it at the vet's. I will get a new one but for now I am using the old "short" leash which means I have to stop when he does.... No, I have no one to spell me, but I am going to get someone to come once a month so I can go to a book club. Even that will be expensive. The most revered/reliable(?) agency in our area charges $25/hour--certainly more than I ever made in my life. Instead I am getting a student nurse to come for this once a month outing for $15-17/hour. Thank goodness someone suggested that to me at our Alzheimer support meeting. Other members of my family are 60-1000 miles away, so I have no real option. I just have no energy for running right now, it seems, as well. Oddly enough, the aches and pains I had pre-running have not started bothering me again yet like they did the last time I stopped running. I know I will have to start up again but I'm just not able right now, yet I need to keep this conversation with you going, as it is the thread that keeps me in "the running family." For that, thank you sooo much!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to LiisaM

You are welcome....You are sorting things gradually.. and I can empathise with the way you feel.

Just take each day slowly and steadily..one step at a time... and when you are ready to take a short jogette...you will know. Please, do, stay with us.... and you know where I am xx

LiisaM profile image
LiisaMGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Oldfloss. You have no idea how important you are to my physical health! Today our dog, a hundred pound black lab, saw an Irish Setter receding on our road and decided to take after it doing a comfortable "trot." It was grand! I ran with him for a little less than a tenth of a mile but then we turned around, "walk" over.... I took yr advice and "ran" with this opportunity--so even your recent words were helpful.

Hello, fellow runners! I'm doing W7R2 this evening, straight after work. I'm lucky that the route to the Sports Centre is very well-lit for my 5-minute warm-up walk, and then onto the Sports Centre itself, it's always busy in the evenings and again, well-lit, apart from one end which is pitch black, so I just have to hope the moon is up otherwise I could tumble into the empty boating lake! Speaking of which, this week's Park Run was called off 5 minutes before the start because a dead body was dragged from one of the lakes... :-(

I’m starting W9 😊 still can’t believe I’ve managed to keep this up and biggest surprise is I actually enjoy it!! So this is my last week and it didn’t start great with torrential rain today for R1 but I got out there and did it. However I’ve realised how important drinking enough water the day before is ...I only managed one small bottle yesterday and really felt it on my run today with slight pains and cramping in my legs. Lesson learned ..hydrate!!

So today i finished week 5 run 2

Next run feels like a real landmark.

Today went well which is good because the last two runs were awfully windy and i found them really hard.

Also I'm finding myself craving salt after runs. Anyone else experienced that?

mrrun profile image
mrrunGraduate in reply to Rhedeg

Try and drink at least two litres of water daily. If you struggle put some lemon or lime in there to flavour it and see how it goes. Your body will appreciate it. Try and avoid drinking much before the run, glass or half (or even none at your stage) will do or else you get all sorts of sloshing/toilet issues. You don’t need that stuff. Drinking a day before the run and right after the run is what counts.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Rhedeg

Well done... maybe check your hydration... good hydration every single day is important...

Rhedeg profile image
RhedegGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Oh i hydrate plenty

I have a 2.2 litre water bottle i drink at work and i have a couple of other pints of water in a day.

I've been hydrating like that for years tbh

The salt craving is new and on days that i run

Ran W9R3 again this morning, having reverted to week 7 after a holiday. Not sure where to go next, though am planning on a park run in the New year. Proud of myself that I've got up at 7 and gone out when it's been really quite cold! I'll try and keep it up over the festive period, though with small grandchildren around I may find I'm on Granny duty so less time for myself!!
