Need some help: Hey I’m an overweight teenager... - Couch to 5K
Need some help
Welcome.
Running is great for mental health, including anxiety, so we need to get you up and running... the more running you’re doing, the bigger the benefits, so it’s not going to be immediate.
As for weight, that depends on a few factors. If you’re looking to lose more than a few pounds it will also require a nutritional change... if that’s the case, check in with weight loss NHS forum on this server. If you’re just losing a little weight, give it time, running will do it, as long as you’re not currently gaining weight, and also tone you up.
The best news is, you can totally do this. Run slowly, resist the urge to go fast, building endurance and stamina is best achieved by keeping the pace down.
In a couple of months you should be much fitter, on the way to being healthy, a little smaller (never rush weight loss) a lot more confident, and running 30 minutes. Enjoy the journey.
Welcome to the forum.
This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
In the guide you will see that feeling self conscious about being seen is extremely common and also that most people realise incredibly quickly that the majority of people are too busy with themselves to even notice you when out running.
The mental health benefits of running and of working your way through the programme are huge. Most people get a huge boost to their self esteem and confidence by doing this training plan.

Please try not to feel self conscious........I used to feel the same when I first started the programme but quickly realised that actually nobody is watching at all....everyone is busy doing their own thing to even notice.(And that's with me running in a bright pink running jacket!,😂)
If I ever see anyone running,i honestly always think...,.well done for getting out there,I really do!
So,my advice to you would be,just get out there and start the programme and you will be surprised to do better than you think you will!
Believe in yourself because you can do this!
good luck and keep us posted.....🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
Hi there. Welcome! Before I started all this, I worried about being seen out by people. But honestly, no one is looking and if they are, it’s with a jealousy that you’re doing it and they’re not! Get your trainers and give it a go. You’ll amaze yourself. Looking forward to reading your post about your first run. Good luck.
Hi faultyspell, the great news is you have chosen running. Running is the single most activity that will have you fading into the background. If you have a little think about runners/joggers how often have you given them more than a cursetory glance? And maybe cursed them under your breath for being too sodding healthy for words? The greatest part of jogging is the freedom it gives you confidence... for me it happened in week 7. The good news is that you can run early morning or at night now where you are even less visible (though I suggest something high vis so you don’t get attacked by vehicles). It’s a hard journey but it is worth it, I started in September and I just graduated. This forum is the single most reason I got through. Update us every step of the way and we will support you as we have been supported.Don’t fear to post, don’t fear to fail, we have all been there, someone will be experiencing or will have experienced what you are going through. Every one will want to help and advise where applicable. Wishing you many happy miles
Hi & welcome! 😄
Great decision to do C25K- there are so many benefits waiting for you. 😃 This is your running adventure - go gently and enjoy.
If you post how you are getting on we will cheer you on every step of the way. 😀
PS My teenage daughter has taken up running. She was a bit “iffy” to begin with, but she persevered and really enjoys it now.
Hello, glad you found us. This is the most supportive board ever. I've fought anxiety and depression and its bliddy hard work, but know you absolutely CAN DO IT! Most of anxiety is just the negative voices in our head. The reality is that the majority of people dont notice or care about other people exercising. Apart from maybe the occasional curse under their breath about being fit barstools. Or positives from other runners who give us the well done look. But more importantly is how you will feel once you've completed each run. Every time you go out you will gain confidence in yourself, and the negative voices start turning into positive ones. The absolute KEY thing is to run SLOWLY. You need to build up your muscles and stamina. AND keep posting on here, good or bad. You absolutely CAN do this!
You'll see a lot of posts here about gremlins, we all get them.
The buzz you get once you've completed a run, and when you get fitter is amazing. o
Not all runs go well, some days you'll find it easier, injuries happen too. Stick at it, you can do it!
