Getting acquainted with the injury couch

About two weeks and half ago, I had to stop running because of (not related to running) back nerve issues. I got them sorted out, and last Tuesday the GP gave me the green light to start running again from the following Friday. I did an easy 20 minutes run to ease back into it and I enjoyed it so much.

So this morning I went for my usual 30 minutes route. Foggy day, autumnal woods, soaking wet ground. I felt quite confident running though, as I find wet leaves on mud are a rather stable surface. Until, 20 minutes in, I got to a long downhill slope which I had forgotten was not mud but pebbles. Wet, slippery pebbles hidden under wet, slippery leaves. I took about three steps on it before I twisted my ankle.

I don't think it's too bad as it isn't bruised, just swollen, but painful. Just as I was so glad to be back on track. Sigh.

Ouch. Hope it’s not too bad and you’ll be back soon. Good run too, apart from the last 3 steps obviously

I’m loving my running! Longest so far 6k, falling in love with the slow runs. Was supposed to be run day, but I ran Saturday and while I was collapsed in a sweaty heap after it half on the backseat of my car, I got an email asking if I’d tailwalk parkrun juniors, and I said of course. Now, I marshal juniors a lot, and the tailwalker always gets a 2k walk... this was my third time doing it, and yes... everyone I walked behind quit the run, so I had to run most of it... it’s always me! So having being forced out of a rest day I’m taking two now, don’t want to injure myself!

Wow, 6k is awesome ! And yes, you deserve that two days' rest - and a nice drink too 👏

The run will be there when you’ve re recovered. Fingers crossed your back on form soon, it must be frustrating

Thanks for this. It's true, the run won't be going anywhere.

Just keep RICEing it and you’ll be good as new in no time😀

Oh nooo HE. Darned pebbles. 👎 But you’re smart and recognise the need to rest, so I’m sure you’ll look after your ankle and be back out again before too long. 🤞

Thanks! I'm just hoping it will heal fast enough that I don't loose too much fitness, but I guess I'll have to wait for as long as it takes.
