Yes, I’m back again and this time it’s serious stuff. Is there a song that is your favourite cover version ever? For me I adore His Purple Highness, but have to concede that Sinead ‘Connor’s version of his song Nothing Compares 2 U, is just a little more compelling to listen to. And so my retro runner buddies, these are the covers I love best so far:-
Nothing compares 2 U - Sinead O’ Connor
Kiss - Art Of Noise/Tom Jones
Valerie - Ronson and Whitehouse
Monkey Man and Back to Black - Amy Winehouse
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart - Almond and Pitney
I Only Want To Be With You - The Tourists
Please let me know the covers you love and they’ll go on our best covers ever playlist. As ever, the editor’s decision is final.
I can't wait to see what ideas you all have - this could be another 2 part playlist I think. If you name the tracks, I’ll create the playlist.
And the pic is the article about my run the year challenge in Runner’s World - thanks to you all on here and Mr Smooth, my story was considered interesting enough to be featured. More of you contributed to my sponsorship, as a result and thanks to Hidden for her post on here to that effect. For that, every other post urging me on, and every penny donated by all you lovely people I have to say a big, big thank you to the C25K running family. Mummycav this will be you one day for sure.
p.s. Anyone else think I look weirdly shaped in this pic?
Hehe... that could still be hallelujah... I still don’t think I’ve heard all 80+ verses of that and I must have 100 versions of it or more. My least favourite is the original, but then I could say that about lots of Leonard Cohen songs 😂
Check that... yesterday has been covered over 2000 times apparently
See... mott the hoople was the original recording... so I was torn between Bruce and David... went with Bruce as I thought can your own song also be a cover?
As ever you are my friendly musical nemesis on this - you know way so much more music than I do... Cradle of filth - you’re going to have to educate me as to their merits!!, as I’m struggling to see them. And joint ventures I’m not sure they really count. But ‘most’ of yours are in....
Well... they’re masters of extreme metal, which you either love or hate, that much I get, and wouldn’t recommend much of their other stuff to ears that aren’t used to it... need some Slayer first!
The guy who played Pinhead in hellraiser is a part time member of the band.
They also use a classically trained female voice to counter the extreme voice of the vocalist. I loved the original Stay, but this one is even more haunting. They do love to throw some cover versions of pop songs on, to the derision of some of their own fans. The temptation cover probably needed reigning in slightly.
They have a t-shirt that is illegal in New Zealand too 😂
And... when little miss UNM was a baby she didn’t sleep well... if I put their “her ghost in the fog” on in the car she’d fall asleep... and it works on her now if she’s over tired... it’s not a traditional lullaby though 😂
Read the article in Runners World and it was a great read Jan. You look lovely in your photo, well done for all you do. My cover version suggestion is All along the Watchtower by Afterhere, it was the theme song in The programme. Amity Fair, originally by Jimi Hendrix
I take Bob tunes on my long runs when you need a good long song with non-recurring lyrics. Eg Bob, Rod Stewart and Chuck Berry (although his arent long). I was lucky enough to see Chuck ✊
Saw Rod,too loads of times 😃 He has done more covers than most ! 👍
Thanks for the kind comments - I like the Afterhere version so it is in too. Watch this space for the release, but it may take some time, as everyone has come up with such great ideas. Always reliable the C25K running crew!
As I’m thankful the band isn’t anthrax or some other frightening word - it is in. Parody or not and besides which we all need a laugh tune once in a while when we’re running
I know. I saw Miriam Mekebe once and I know she did a cover. Speaking of foreign language songs, sort of, (of which I have quite a few inherited from dead relatives) one of the best has to be Hawaiian War Chant by Spike Jones 😁
By the way nothing compares 2 u - prince is also eligible as it wasn’t the first recording of the song, first recording was by The Family... Prince wrote it for them... I agree Sinead, or whatever she’s called now, did the best version.
I followed the chat with interest, because it’s always interesting to see where musical tastes take you. And my music choices have definitely widened as a result of doing this... Just not sure me and UnfitNoMore share exactly the same tastes - I’m more ‘pop’ and mainstream I think...
Okay as I caveated this list with the ‘editorial’ rider, I’m absolutely under no circumstances adding in the screamingly awful Nat Imbruglia. It’s on my waste of oxygen list. There’s nothing you can say to persuade me either- even if she personally saves the planet from mass destruction....
I’m sorry that song, Gloria Gaynor’s I will Survive and also Talking Heads Once In A Lifetime all hit my own version of 'fingernails down the blackboard’ songs - maybe that’s a playlist to create?
Blondie - no probs and frankly anything by his purple highness is just glorious
Hi Hidden , so good to have you back & seeing that you have seen your article that must mean that youre back or have been back in the UK?? So what do you think?? its a brilliant article, very inspiring & no, you do not look a funny shape in the picture, I don't know what you mean?? You look fab...I am your No1 fan though, well in the list of many I'm sure!!!!
Ok, I am excited for the next playlist and as usual I like to play a little part in these things!!!! You have already mentioned my all time favourite cover version which is, of course, Sinead O'Conner's Nothing compares to you...'Valerie' 'Monkey man' & 'tainted love are already on your list too so I have a few more for you to ponder over...
'Don't leave me this way' - The Communards
'Take me to the river' - Talking heads
'China girl' - David Bowie
'I drove all night' - Cyndi Lauper
'It's oh so quiet' - Bjork (which I can belt out at a Karaoke leaving everyone stunned!!!)
'Respect' - Aretha Franklin
'Small town boy' - Bronski beat
Thank you for having faith in me & believing that maybe one day I will be capable of such an amazing achievement...if only I could be as inspiring xxxxx
Okay I am back in the UK - arrived late Monday... ran to Covent Garden yesterday and back home from Hampstead today. Got to do a 10k tomorrow am a little behind. Your suggestions sound fab so am sure they will all make the cut
You are already an inspiration to so many of us and distance - well it’s just a matter of time!
XXX
JCR (minus the weird wrinkly paunch on one side...)
That’s such a kind thing to say, I certainly do hope that some of my posts have made a difference to at least one person!
I am having trouble at the moment with strava & runkeeper but I am still out there...I have to run 40k this month for a poppy run, sounds feeble compared to your achievement, it’s not going to get me into any mags & become famous in the running world I know, but it’s a start!! X
2 birds one stone answer - your suggestions are in the list..., love them all - we are definitely lost twins!
The 10k I bombed out, I’ve run 50kms this week and last Sunday did just over 11km, with travelling back to London all day Monday, I couldn’t get the energy source to do the 10km. I have a feeling that not having done all that core strength work that you’re advised to do on here , may mean that my bod is finally saying 'enough is enough’
I had in mind to do a mini 7km today to get me over the 1818km mark and leave me with fewer than 200kms to go, but mmm little legs after 5 days running streak, basically screamed at me this morning. But am out there again tomorrow for my sins.
You doing 40km for poppy run that’s a fab achievement - and remember I’m not working, so one thing I do have in my favour is more time availability than most on here. But you are most definitely famous in this running world - cavtastic!
❤️ Your legs are so strong! Just like your determination & passion for your quest. I’m getting one of my special bottles of fizz all the way from Carcassonne ready to pop when you take that last stride xxxx (& tissues too coz it’s going to be emotional....) xxx
You look gorgeous....Mr JCR needs help with his ironing though!
• in reply to
Thanks for the compliment - I tried ironing that top and it is unironable - so not good enough to look sharp when it is ironed and not tech fabric that drops the creases. A bad buy all round I think....
Mr JCR looked shocked at the thought of doing my ironing....
You're back! Fabulous article and fab picture too. I seem to rushing from one thing to another so will post some covers when I get a mo, although several of my suggestions are already appearing in other people's posts.
Let me know if you fancy running together sometime. Or alternatively just scoffing a PCT.
I am back in London, bit blitzed next 2 weeks but things improve a little towards end of November. I have runnerchondria at present - there’s a hip thing going on, which aches and aches on one side, when I don’t run. It goes when I do, but worsens after every run so my distances and times are both suffering a little at present.
So short term a PCT meet up would be nice and then if hip gets better a gentle 5k might be on the cards but bear in mind I’m about 2 minutes a km slower than you with this runnerchondria hip. I can go fast just for one km or two then it drops away rapidly.
But you’re doing so well generally with your European running habit ...
happy running and I’ll message you on dates for PCT - but its your dates that are more important really as Fix is just around the corner for me!
I'm happy running at a slower pace. And a PCT at Fix would be good too. Sorry to hear about your runnerchonrdria, it sounds nasty. Have you thought about seeing a physio?
On my to do list - there’s a sports injury clinic for me to see them about runnerchondria hip and the year old frozen shoulder. Honestly if I were a dog the vet would be talking about putting me down!
Will check out diary etc and get back to you on ‘free’ dates then we can compare your ‘free’ days with mine and PCT/running will happen
Hazy shade of winter (bangles version) was for less than zero soundtrack, which is probably the only place Slayer and the bangles shared a slab of vinyl! Slayers was also a cover, but they hated that from the get go as much as I did 😂
