Retro Runners - Disco Divas Playlist Released

It’s been a week since we lost Aretha, and so it seems a little too late in the day to be celebrating the Disco Divas with my latest playlist. Aretha’s Respect was the first song I chose for this list. Thanks to all, for the suggestions. Please enjoy it and perhaps ‘Say A Little Prayer’ for the ultimate diva of Soul Music, who will be sadly missed.

Retro? I remember some of those being released! Oh my god... I’m that old that my youth is retro?

Nice list

Thanks Jan. I’ve taken a lot of these and created my own Disco Divas playlist in Deezer and I’m looking forward to taking the girls out running in Jersey at the weekend.

Wow! The heck with Chris Rea and his Stansbury girls - I want to run with you Jersey Ladies! ☺

Stainsby Girls 👍

in reply tomisswobble

but how do I categorise that one? I love the toon, but so far not any of my categories seem to fit it, and my next one which is Famous Names won’t work either... harrumph - confused JCR...

misswobble profile image

I was just correcting Stainsby, not making any comment about the choice of track 😃

in reply toRazouski

Good I’m glad you can make some use of them - it’ quite a pacy list I found when testing it, but I like that anyway. have a fab weekend... XX

I’m looking forward to running with it. I really like pacey tracks to run too, so it will suit me well. I’ve even left off the slower ones to stop me slowing down. X

What a great list!!! I want to go running but stuck at my desk 🤣🤣

in reply toPolly2810

It’s been throughly road-tested, I love it, although you have to be in a pace mood to do it I find, so it’s an early morning run when its cooler, rather than one of my lazy lounge type runs.. Poor you stuck in an office, I am just making hokey pokey ice cream...

Oh what I would give to be doing that rather than suspense accounts and cash book 🤣🤣🤣 bit it pays the bills!!

Razouski profile image

What is hokey pokey ice cream? 🤔

I seem to get persuaded to make straciatella with monotonous regularity. And then hubby just goes and eats it! 🍦

in reply toRazouski

hokey pokey is the Kiwi term for cinder toffee. Make cinder toffee, and add to good quality vanilla (or as that is very rich I add it to yoghurt) ice-cream. Hokey Pokey is a Kiwi obsession and the level of ‘pokeyness’ hotly debated - personally I like the ice cream to be full of the sharp caramelly bits, but it is a straight sugar mainline experience, so exercise a must!

I love stracciatella and Zuppa Inglese flavour too - I keep explaining to Italians is that there is no such dessert in the UK called English Soup!

thanks Jancanrun - I love your playlists and will sing along all the way around with this one...not retro for me either!!

in reply toMandiV

Well ‘retro’ is a catch all, relating to the toons not the people running to them, as we are mere spring chickens

I remember them all being released. :)

Great selection :)

Little did I know listening to them on an old 9v Bush radio in those now far-off days, that I would meet and chat with three on your list, and meet and issue a Stern warning about "unacceptable behavior" to a fourth 🙂

Aretha Franklin was one of the three good ones - and she was a lovely, warm hearted and generous lady. A pleasure to listen to, a pleasure to know. She certainly had my Respect.

in reply toIrish-John

I cant believe she’s no longer here, when I first thought of the theme - Respect just had to be track number 1. Nothing else stood out as much. Lucky you getting to meet and ‘scold’ some of these great ladies

I have Rescue Me on vinyl 😁

My early disco days we had Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep and Tweedle Dee tweedle dum No to mention the fabbo Tina Charles. I love to love but my babe just loves to dance, yes he does 😃

I can’t recall the Grace Jones one being played in the disco 🤔. She was a diva all right though 🤨

in reply tomisswobble

I think the song I can remember from my first ‘grown up’ disco was at a school adventure holiday when I was about 11am and the song was Yellow River... I got asked to dance by a German bloke who punched his arms towards the floor.... What a mover!

misswobble profile image
misswobbleGraduate in reply to

I have that too! Christie I love the fast bit! A tongue twister, do have a go😁 “got no time for explanations, got no time to lose, tomorrow night you’ll find me sleeping underneath the moon”. Or was it just me 😜

I got to thinking this afto about my real early disco days and one of the earliest must have been Little Eva “Locomotion” and Millie’s “ my boy Lollipop” Our disco was homespun so it was whatever they had.

I watched Three Degrees in a nightclub in Sheffield. They epitomised disco for me So glamorous. All lip gloss, wigs and huge nails 😃. That was later though.
