Disaster 1 run from graduation 😩

I was supposed to be doing my final run of Week 9 today. I’ve absolutely loved doing C25K and am hooked, but disaster has struck and any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am so desperate to get that last run done!

I was over the moon 3 days ago as I completed 5k in 29:01 on run 8- by far my PB. However, this was the day after I was sat on an awfully uncomfortable Ryanair (never use them by the way!) plane for hour upon hour thanks to several delays. I felt a twinge in my lower back / top of my right buttock when I was getting off the plane but thought nothing of it. I thought the run the next day was just what I needed to loosen everything up!

The day after my best ever run though, the pain was intense. I was thinking it may be sciatic pain, as it is located in the top of my right buttock / lower back, but it is not going down my leg at all. There is no way that I will run until the pain has gone down, but does anyone have any advice on how best to deal with this / how long this sort of pain lasts / will I ever get to do my graduation run??? Thank you in advance!

I damaged my knee 2 years ago and injury is recurrent. So my c25k journey has been like a game of snakes and ladders, one minute at top of a ladder, next right back down a snake to square one. Totally frustrating! Has taken me 13/14 weeks to do programme and still not there yet. But I will get there. Any injury should be heeded. Rest your leg, when you feel stronger do a shorter run from one of the earlier weeks to get back in the zone. As the tutorial says you will have good and bad runs, just pick yourself up after any set back and keep going. Get better soon.

Thank you for the advice. I’ve finally been able to run again this morning and did my graduation run! Feels great to be back on it!

Sound like a trapped sciatic nerve... classic pain in the butt... but, we are not experts.. so.. get it checked out by experts.

The trouble is, from my own experience, it impacts the piriformis muscle and the pain is agony.. and we never run through pain..

healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Mine was cause by twisting awkwardly whist holding small runner in training!

I was on the IC for a month..until a really helpful forum friend whose judgement I respect sent me a link which enabled me to get the first night's sleep I had had in three weeks!

There are some great exercise which help..but it is better to get a correct diagnosis first.. I can PM you the links, as and when, if you need them ?? :)

The good news is.. it will get better... and if you have no pain down your legs etc that is a good sign.. keep moving though..gently...just do not run.

Well done!

Thank you for the advice. It really did help. Thankfully the pain has now subsided and I returned to the running today and graduated! Hope I don’t wake up in agony tomorrow! 😂

I’ve had bad back pain for years and it sounds like your muscle has gone into a spasm due to bad posture on the plane. Look at nhs exercises for lower back pain. They do work. Take ibuprofen if you can and leave the run until it’s better.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply to me. I’ve given it 2 weeks and returned to it today as the pain had subsided. I’ve finally completed my graduation run and feel fantastic!

I didn’t think I’d be able to keep going for 30 minutes after a 2 week lay off, but I did and it felt very comfortable. It helps that I’m on holiday and got to do it in Portugal which was more scenic!

Again, thanks for all of the advice- it really did help- especially the stretches. I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that I don’t wake up tomorrow in agony!!
