Walking through 2019

Having had several issues in 2018 which have stopped me running, I've decided the most sensible thing to do is to walk rather than run. It means no pressure to run, if I can run then I will and if I can't, then I can still walk. I've signed up to a 5km walk/run to end 2018 and a 5km walk/run in the first week in January 2019 and I've set myself a challenge to walk every day through January. Walking will be at a brisk pace but not a running pace. I've also set myself the challenge to actually get to my ideal weight too after faffing about for too many years, I have just 18lbs to lose after losing 2st. So, 2019 is the year I am actually going to get there.

Happy running / walking / C25k or whatever activity gets you out there! xx

Thanks Tasha & the same to you x

Walking has many health benefits too. Race walking might be worth a look.

Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2019 x

Very wise , as you say reduces the pressure. I have more or less come to the same conclusion for myself regarding running v walking. My Knees are decrepit and I look to try and get a second opinion on them this coming year. Can't run also as just had a breast cancer op too this month so we can't have that wobbling all over the place ( within sports bra) just yet. However I am trying to get some walking in every day while I'm off sick. Next challenge is 4 weeks of radiotherapy but not got the start date yet. Once I've got all this cancer treatment stuff out of the way , I shall get back on to my knee issues and tackle that. In the meantime I am happily volunteering at parkrun. All the best with your walking challenge in 2019

It is my knee that is causing the issue with me too. You definitely don’t want wobbly bits after the op. Hope it all goes well with the radiotherapy xx

Check out your local Parkrun. The name is a little misleading. They allow for people who walk, too. That's why the last person to finish is a volunteer called the Tail-walker, not Tail-runner. Of course, if you still feel up to doing a little bit of jogging during the 5K, you can still mix that in whilst mostly walking.

Just a thought.

I used to run my local parkrun & have thought of walking it. It is a bit more of a trail so I would need to be careful but it is worth a try x

Walking's good. I can't run due to chronic shin splints. I've walked on average 6 days a week since February and along with modifying my diet have lost 2 stone 8 lbs.

Excellent. Walking has health benefits and when I first lost weight 30 yes ago, walking was what I did. 5k done today in 53 minutes so I am pleased with that. Well done on your weight loss too x

Well done! I am joining in the walk every day challenge too! Did you follow any food regime, or just cut portions?

I had some family loss and was eating between meals every time I walked past the fridge. As I work from home this was a lot of the time. I cut out the in-between food and cut back on my alcohol intake. I bought a Fitbit last January and it has been a big help in recording my activities. 1,740 miles walked so far in 11 months.

Fitbit for me too, done pretty well, not as good as you though. Need to set some step goals for myself! Working from home, wow, I would be living in that fridge! Well done and continued success. Intriguing profile name, btw. Dont tell me how it came about just yet, enjoying trying to work it out!

I am a long time WW member but I am going to try it with low carb.

I lost the most weight ever, and kept it off, with the dr michael moseley eight weeks blood sugar diet, low carb - still keep to a lot of the principles, except for the last 6 months. No hunger, enjoyed the food, felt great. Cauliflower pizza recommended!!

Good for you, “exercise how you can, not how you can’t” is a message for all of us. 😀

My 15months since beginning C25K has had a number of interruptions caused by illness/ injury & I’ve realised that walking (& for me cycling too) are more constantly possible. The running I do as much as I can.

On the topic of sore knees, my GP gave me a couple of strengthening exercises & told me to keep cycling. This enabled me to recover from a knee sprain & be ok since. Good luck & all the best for your fresh plans - they sound good! 😃

Thanks for the posts, you have inspired me, I too have the dodgy knee issue. After several aborted attempts at starting c25k again, having been a graduate and building up my speed and distance I felt really deflated. You girls have reminded me we can all get out there and do something, good on you! I am taking up the walk every day in January challenge (with walking poles) and do my physio glutes/quads knee strengthening. Plus, really crack on with losing weight, who knows, I may be a runner again! Good luck to all, we all face challenges and they are all different. Thank you for inspiring and kicking me up the backside x

Thanks for all your replies. It has made me think about strengthening exercises. I am a nurse & former sports masseur & sometimes I forget that I have the knowledge to help myself. Good luck to us all in 2019 & I particularly like the phrase “exercise as you can not as you can’t” & am going to have that as my motto. Xx
