Week 9 Run 3 ๐Ÿ˜

Phew โ€“ Iโ€™ve actually done it and am feeling very chuffed.

As per my profile, my goal was to get fit enough to leap up several flights of stairs like a gazelle with no groaning or panting involved! Goal achieved in June when I climbed the 284 steps to the top of the Arc de Triomphe and the 268 steps required to enter the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Le Puy en Velay (each was absolutely worth the effort!). Canโ€™t say I leapt, but I still had a spring in my step at the top and I could breathe!

This programme has been great. It took me 13 weeks to complete due to touring around France during heatwave (but I did one run each week to keep my hand in โ€“ the locals looked at me as if I was completely mad!) and a lovely but full-on week of family staying (including 3 and 6 year old grandchildren) - far more exhausting than any run!!

I hadnโ€™t run since school and I know I couldnโ€™t have managed without Lauraโ€™s steady encouragement and the advice on this forum so thanks to everyone who takes the time to share their experiences.

Here are some of the things that helped me that may help new starters:

โ€ขI bought proper running shoes at the outset, which I think helped avoid knee injuries

โ€ขThe mantra of slow and steady is the key to success. My first run was hell because I treated it like trying to catch a bus!

โ€ขAvoid hills wherever possible

โ€ขClothes that wick moisture are essential

โ€ขIt really is OK to wear Lycra leggings โ€“ no-one else is looking!

โ€ขOnce I reached the 20-minute landmark I embraced technology ๐Ÿ˜‚ and downloaded my own playlists. What a revelation โ€“ time goes more quickly when youโ€™re enjoying your own music and sometimes even have spare breath to sing along! I defy anyone not to keep going when listening (and doing the hand moves!) to Boogie Wonderland (Earth Wind and Fire) or attempting the falsettos on Two Hearts (Chris Isaak). I like an eclectic mix . . . Riders on the Storm (Doors) helps me keep a slow, even pace.

โ€ขIn hot weather take a sweat band or similar โ€“ sweat running into eyes is very painful!

โ€ขDoing this programme seems to engender healthier eating (I donโ€™t know why, it just does) but thereโ€™s no need to give up wine ๐Ÿท

โ€ขI donโ€™t track my speed โ€“ my trusty old pedometer is fine for tracking distance

Like many others on this forum Iโ€™m nowhere near 5 km but Iโ€™m happy with what Iโ€™ve achieved. As an older runner (Iโ€™m 66) my goal isnโ€™t to run 5k in 30 minutes, but to extend my running time and level of fitness. In time I may even get to 5k, but no worries if not. Iโ€™ll definitely keep running โ€“ after decades of looking after everyone else itโ€™s now โ€˜my own thingโ€™ ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ.

Well done - great tips, although I'm not convinced about the lycra.

My sentiments exactly. Iโ€™m 64, started C25k end of April graduated a month ago and am now running 4.5 miles in around 50 minutes, lost over a stone. I literally follow my own goals, listen to 70s rock, fav being AC/DC Highway to Hell, which was appropriate when I was unfit. Good tips from you, which I did myself, especially the sweatbands and running shoes. Us oldies but not so oldies will keep going, loving this running lark.

Great post and I am also in my sixties and just completed a second C25k as I lapsed over the winter months.

I agree with the lycra. I'm not a pretty sight wearing it but what the heck I don't care what I look like if it does the trick.

Also agree with start off with proper running shoes - sure it stops my knees hurting and no blisters ever!

I'd love to have better times for 5k but still feel a thrill that my stamina has increased and can do 7k when I put my mind to it. Slow IS good and steady is even better!
