Week8 R1 done but didn’t quite go as expected

Started my penultimate week this evening and it didn’t quite go as expected. It was hot, it was humid, I was hungry and wasn’t really in the mood for a run but off I went on a new route with Michael Johnson giving me guidance over the next 28 killer minutes.

I definitely went off too quick, first 1k done in 5.11 according to my Apple Watch Nike app, a 1k PB but my legs, lungs and feet were screaming “slow the f... down”. I listened and lowered the pace over the next couple of k, 3k done in just under 17 minutes, not bad ! I looked at the app on my phone, 11 minutes 10 seconds to go and it was definitely hurting but gritted my teeth and kept going.

After what seemed an eternity running into a head wind I checked the app again to see time remaining as I’d not heard Michael for some time and I do miss his dulcet tone. Couldn’t believe it, the app was paused on 11 minutes 8 seconds. I’d ran and ran and ran but no time had passed arrrghhhh! As it was a new route never ran before I had no markers for distance either so oblivious to time but luckily I had my Apple Watch on and it measured 5.02 km and I’d been running for 29.55 minutes! slightly overdid the expected week 8 run1 28 minutes but hit the 5k. I’m not sure I should feel happy hitting 5k but I’m a bit disappointed it went off plan to be honest.

I still don’t think I’m a runner though 😕 it still feels like too hard work! 2 days rest and hopefully back at it for run 2 on Thursday

Anyone who can do 5k sub 30 minutes is definitely a Runner in my book! Wow, well done.

Sorry, did I read that wrong? You feel disappointed? 🤔

Kind of, it was a struggle majority of the way to be honest. I felt more elation when I first broke the 20 minute run in week 4 or 5 in all honesty.

You can either take pleasure(“well that was tough but I did it anyway”) or induce negative emotions by negative self talk (“that was really hard, I’m not getting any better at this”)

One will reinforce your progress, the other will undermine it. 😉

5k in 29.55 is a amazing. It sounds like you just didn't particularly enjoy it we all have runs like that, you probably need to work on pace.

Well done you! MJ has gone awol on me a couple of times, so I now keep a close eye on him! You did it and thats an impressive time too! I did that run this morning too. I can't say that it's easy, but were doing it. ❤️

I can't imagine how disappointed I will feel if I ever manage to run a sub 30 5k 😕 that is still one if my 2 great goals, the other being to get to 10k, maybe once I achieve those I will be able to concentrate on enjoying my running

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from disappointed with the time and distance, just that this is the first time the app has let me down and I've gone off plan. It's kind of like it happened by accident rather than will power and when I saw the distance I was like "oh ok" instead of "yessss !!"
