Just registered 😱
Great Manchester 10k 19th May 2019: Just... - Couch to 5K
Great Manchester 10k 19th May 2019
Well done Jay! It gives you plenty of time to build up to running the distance too. You know the mantra, take it slow and steady and you'll get there.
Good luck with the preparation.
That’s my theory - if I can’t be ready in 11 months there’s no hope!
You'll be ready!! You need some shorter-term goals too though. Something every three months to keep you motivated. You'll be slaying 10K in 11 months. And you'll have a new slim-line wardrobe and more unusual and previously undetected muscles
Shorter term for now is crack 5k each week and bring the time down then look to extend it. I’ll end up doing JuJu’s plan for sure, just not for a few months. I still need to shed best part of 5 stone and that is going to take months.
You’ll be running half marathons by then! Stands to reason, dunnit? 5K = 9 weeks. 20K = 36 weeks. 😂
And that was helpful and supportive??
Brilliant Jay! A realistic timescale as well.
I'm toying with the idea of doing my local Half Marathon (sallenson is already registered!) but it's next March and very hilly so I'm going to wait a bit and see how I go with 10k before commiting x
How is the 10K party doing? Difficult to navigate around the Big School site, but I haven't heard any screams yet
Not yet! I'm only on week 1 and having to freestyle it a bit! Parkrun with my son now (though not tomorrow ) so we don't run the whole way but apparently it still counts. Didn't do the short run this week either as I went 5k with a group in Hailsham but we didn't run all of that either as it was very "cross country". So cross country in fact we actually got chased by a herd of bulls 😂 It;s very relaxed over on Bridge to 10k
Just off to try and find a circular footpath from home round to Combe Haven then back up Harley Shute. Debating whether to do the hoovering first in case I get lost x
If you get lost you won’t care about the hoovering.
Hoovering vs Harley Shute (which for non-locals is a short but insanely steep hill up towards a caravan park) is tricky... No neither. Sunbathe instead 👍👍
I’m about to start week 3 and that’s the 7k - screaming may commence soon after! 😜
I know!!! I ran with my daughter and we did the 5k today. It was like breathing soup again and that was early too, well 7.00am. I’m going to leave it a couple of days then do the 7k and then leave the 3.5k for a recovery run
You go Marie!! X
"Marie"? You 10k folk are dead informal! Is that the Modern Way?
You can only know our real names if you are in our Strava gang.....! 😁
Good luck! You've certainly got determination and I admire you for that 🏃😀
Are you going to move over to Bridge To 10k? AKA 'the dark side'
Eventually. But I’m nowhere near ready for that yet. I need to make 5k routinely each week for a while. The run is 20 weeks after Christmas, so plenty of time... (Famous last words!)
You can do it. You already have a plan with '+10%' each week. It's realistic and achievable. You've given yourself plenty of time to train and prepare yourself. You've clearly got the dedication and desire too.
its a long term plan and I suspect you are generating a spreadsheet to go with it!
Amazing, that's one way to make sure you stay on track 😁
😳 way to go!! You’ll smash it, plenty of time to get there
Good for you Jay. Sounds a good plan without pressure and just enjoying the build up to 10k. 👌
Woohoo!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉xx
Fantastic goal Jay. No doubt at all that you'll achieve it. 👍
This is like a Coffee Morning. All the Old Gang together talking nonsense. This is the life!!
The big kids table is so cool.
I’d love to have croissant and a hot cup of coffee with you all, but in bed now first parkrun in 8 hours, already down to 4 degrees here but bonus park run isn’t on Fridays as this morning it was -1 👍 yay!
I’m one of them 10 pound poms, originally from Stockport
Good on ya, Jay!! Don’t know if I’ve quite got the bottle to sign up for a 10K, but the Manchester one would be my race of choice. I’m sure you ‘ll be well prepared by next May!
I’ve done a couple of 5K runs in the last fortnight, along with some shorter ones in between. I’m still bitten by the running bug and can’t imagine stopping......just not sure how far I want to go yet.
Good luck in your preparations - look forward to reading your posts. 😃
It’s 11 months away. What else are you going to do between now and then?
Stop it! I’m tempted.....just scared!
Scared of what? You can run regular 5ks. I’ve run one once. You can do 10k by next May....I’ll help.
And you know my history...... I might get lost or fall in the Irwell/Manchester Ship Canal.
No, I wasn’t aware of this. Don’t do the run. Whatever you do... 🤣🤣🤣
Update..... you really did set me thinking....
I’ve signed up!!!! GULP!
😱
Whoop! Whoop!!
I know! Still in shock! I mean, what’s the worse that can happen?? 🤔
Seriously though, I think it’ll really give me something to work at and be a great motivation. I keep thinking that I started all this in early April through the most glorious spell of weather I can ever remember..... hope I feel the same motivation on dark winter mornings!
Same here. I may have to join a gym 😳
Eurgghhh!!! Hate gyms!
I live on a hill in an area that gets lots of snow..... I’m figuring that if I can’t get out for a run, I won’t fancy driving to the gym either!
Oh well - I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.....
There’s 20 weeks after Christmas until the run (not that I’ve counted...). Some of them have to be alright 🤣
Yep, you’re right!
Twill be fine.....
I started in January - and I actually quite enjoyed 'running' in the cold, once I'd got myself some proper running leggings without enormous holes in them (they were not so good 😳) and a warmer running top. It certainly made my walks brisk and I was dying for Laura to tell me to start running so I could start getting warm! Not sure how I'll feel if it's cold and wet though...
Chilly, I expect! I noticed how cold my hands were so I’m going to invest in some decent gloves.
Yes - I can imagine it’s quite “bracing” running in the cold! I’ve yet to experience this. And any excuse for a few new running wardrobe purchases will be welcome, I guess!!
Will keep you posted....
Once I'd got going it was fine, and quite refreshing. Just had to get through that 5 minute walk at the start. Enjoy shopping for your new running gear - and don't forget the gloves and hat!
A hat?!!! Gosh, hadn’t thought of that. I don’t do hats..... but then again, a few months ago, I didn’t do running vests, capri pants or brightly coloured running shoes! And I wouldn’t have dreamt of pounding the streets of the neighbourhood at 6am wearing no make-up. What’s happening to us?!!! 😂
That’s brilliant- it gives you something to aim for so will keep you motivated.
Brave 😎🖖
OMG good for you Jay! 👏👏👏. I’m so impressed. I’m still floundering around in the blissful aftermath of graduating to even think beyond my next run. I haven’t even peeked at other sites/forums/plans yet. Wouldn’t know where to start or look. I may be bothering you for info once I’ve had a few consolidating runs.
For now, you keep going, you are my inspiration and I am your follower 👍😂
Are you feeling stalked? 👀🤣
Well done Jay - if I can get through a 10k in September, I'm sure you'll be more than ready for yours next year
Absolutely brilliant ...Wow that's dedication ..All the best jay I'm sure you will put in all the hard work and make it achievable ...Much respect to you 😊😊
And why not!? Good for you. I'm sure you'll smash it 👍😁
Plenty of time, nothing to worry about. I did several months of nothing but 5K consolidations following my graduation. Then I made sure I ran all 5Ks in under 30 minutes but that is in no case necessary. The point was to get stronger and more comfortable, minimising injury risks. Once I thought (felt) I was ready I moved on to 10K by using the 10% rule and got there soon enough. Then I did what I used to do with 5Ks. Consolidation. One easy, slower 5K run, then one 5K interval run, then a 10K run. Every week. Then I moved onto half marathon but that's another story.
Take it easy and in your own time. Look after you shoes, sleep, calorie intake, stretches, and whatever you do, don't push it, you're not a pro. Take care & enjoy!
Oh, oh, oh....AND, don't forget, the longer the run the more you need to hydrate a day before. On the day of the run a glass of water will do the job, don't go too enthusiastic, your stomach wouldn't tolerate too much water before the event. But, as I wrote - plenty of time to get it right.
Great plan Jay, slow and steady, you'll be a running machine by then🏃♂️
Wow! Super impressed. I will come and cheer you and Cazza26 along! 👏🎉🏆🏃
Hi Jay, Well done you on your 10k planning! I have been having a lovely giggle reading all the back and forth banter in your post 🤣🤣🤣
That’s brilliant! You will be doing 10k easily by then! Great to have a goal! You’ve made me want to look up a local one now ... I’m going to go and have a look 👀
Wow, amazing! What a goal to aim for! It has got me thinking and I’ve really never thought beyond 5k...🐌
Wow Jay! Well done, that's amazing...good for you 😊
Brilliant commitment and motivation 👏🏼👏🏼
Well done and good luck 🍀
Good for you! That's loads of time to consolidate and build up slowly - will be here to support and cheer you on! Good luck with the weight loss too - you're already fitter and healthier than you were when you started, just think where you'll be a year from now
That’s great! You have approached C25K so sensibly, and taken it slow and steady since graduating so I have no doubt that you will smash your 10k next May 🙂
That’s amazing Jay. You can do it
Excellent Jay! Maybe we’ll see you on TV 😊
I’m actually in Manchester this weekend. Never been before. Really enjoying it 😊
My daughter and I went to see Katy Perry at the Arena yesterday. Today it’s shopping and afternoon tea in Cloud 23- so much cake!! 😋
Fantastic! Have a safe journey back. My dad was brought up in Tonyrefail - don’t know if that is anywhere near your part of the valleys.
