Well done Jay! It gives you plenty of time to build up to running the distance too. You know the mantra, take it slow and steady and you'll get there.

Good luck with the preparation.

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to David_G

That’s my theory - if I can’t be ready in 11 months there’s no hope!

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

You'll be ready!! You need some shorter-term goals too though. Something every three months to keep you motivated. You'll be slaying 10K in 11 months. And you'll have a new slim-line wardrobe and more unusual and previously undetected muscles :-)

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to sallenson

Shorter term for now is crack 5k each week and bring the time down then look to extend it. I’ll end up doing JuJu’s plan for sure, just not for a few months. I still need to shed best part of 5 stone and that is going to take months.

Jell6 profile image
Jell6Graduate in reply to sallenson

I nearly didn't recognise you then!

The little buggers will gradually absorb you, and you will be like the Mr Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters !🤣🤣🤣

_SimonT_ profile image
_SimonT_Graduate

You’ll be running half marathons by then! Stands to reason, dunnit? 5K = 9 weeks. 20K = 36 weeks. 😂

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to _SimonT_

And that was helpful and supportive?? :-)

_SimonT_ profile image
_SimonT_Graduate in reply to sallenson

Is that not how it works? 😋

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to _SimonT_

You'll get a full briefing as part of the Badge Handover Ceremony. Together with the bodystocking :-)

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to _SimonT_

Yeah. Let’s unpack that a little “5k = 9 weeks.” Plus 1 week on IC plus 3 weeks postgrad consolidation. So 13 weeks!

20k = 52 weeks = 12 months and I have just under 11 🤣🤣🤣

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

Plus the extra 1K to make it a HM 🤣

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate

Brilliant Jay! A realistic timescale as well.

I'm toying with the idea of doing my local Half Marathon (sallenson is already registered!) but it's next March and very hilly so I'm going to wait a bit and see how I go with 10k before commiting x

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to pianoteacher

How is the 10K party doing? Difficult to navigate around the Big School site, but I haven't heard any screams yet :-)

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate in reply to sallenson

Not yet! I'm only on week 1 and having to freestyle it a bit! Parkrun with my son now (though not tomorrow :-( ) so we don't run the whole way but apparently it still counts. Didn't do the short run this week either as I went 5k with a group in Hailsham but we didn't run all of that either as it was very "cross country". So cross country in fact we actually got chased by a herd of bulls 😂 It;s very relaxed over on Bridge to 10k :-)

Just off to try and find a circular footpath from home round to Combe Haven then back up Harley Shute. Debating whether to do the hoovering first in case I get lost x

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to pianoteacher

If you get lost you won’t care about the hoovering.

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

I don't care much about hoovering generally 😂😂

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate in reply to pianoteacher

Me either. I always think housework is such a waste of time. You clean the house top to bottom..... and 12 months later you’ve got to do it again

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to limberlou

“Whether it needs it or not” 🤣

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

Indeed

Why do you think I took up runnjng? I’m running away from the housework

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate in reply to limberlou

Haha! I like your style x

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to pianoteacher

Hoovering vs Harley Shute (which for non-locals is a short but insanely steep hill up towards a caravan park) is tricky... No neither. Sunbathe instead 👍👍

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate in reply to sallenson

Only a walk today! Didn't do Harley Schute because, as predicted, I got hopelessly lost 😂

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to pianoteacher

That bodes well....

pianoteacher profile image
pianoteacherGraduate in reply to sallenson

Sshh! Don't tell the army - as well as being blind I have no sense of direction! Took me 1.5 hours to walk 6k - you should see the Strava map 😂

Ripcurlrana71 profile image
Ripcurlrana71 in reply to sallenson

I’m about to start week 3 and that’s the 7k - screaming may commence soon after! 😜

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate in reply to Ripcurlrana71

I know!!! I ran with my daughter and we did the 5k today. It was like breathing soup again and that was early too, well 7.00am. I’m going to leave it a couple of days then do the 7k and then leave the 3.5k for a recovery run

Ripcurlrana71 profile image
Ripcurlrana71 in reply to limberlou

I do the Thursday run with a friend and 5k is her limit. So swapped the schedule around a bit! 😊

Ripcurlrana71 profile image
Ripcurlrana71 in reply to pianoteacher

You go Marie!! X

sallenson profile image
sallensonGraduate in reply to Ripcurlrana71

"Marie"? You 10k folk are dead informal! Is that the Modern Way?

Ripcurlrana71 profile image
Ripcurlrana71 in reply to sallenson

You can only know our real names if you are in our Strava gang.....! 😁

You know you want to download Strava now...😬😬😬 x

Goforitmama profile image
GoforitmamaGraduate

Good luck! You've certainly got determination and I admire you for that 🏃😀

Are you going to move over to Bridge To 10k? AKA 'the dark side'

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Goforitmama

Eventually. But I’m nowhere near ready for that yet. I need to make 5k routinely each week for a while. The run is 20 weeks after Christmas, so plenty of time... (Famous last words!)

Goforitmama profile image
GoforitmamaGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

You can do it. You already have a plan with '+10%' each week. It's realistic and achievable. You've given yourself plenty of time to train and prepare yourself. You've clearly got the dedication and desire too.

its a long term plan and I suspect you are generating a spreadsheet to go with it!

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Goforitmama

Ooh good plan!

I’d love to have croissant and a hot cup of coffee with you all, but in bed now first parkrun in 8 hours, already down to 4 degrees here but bonus park run isn’t on Fridays as this morning it was -1 👍 yay!

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate

Good on ya, Jay!! Don’t know if I’ve quite got the bottle to sign up for a 10K, but the Manchester one would be my race of choice. I’m sure you ‘ll be well prepared by next May!

I’ve done a couple of 5K runs in the last fortnight, along with some shorter ones in between. I’m still bitten by the running bug and can’t imagine stopping......just not sure how far I want to go yet.

Good luck in your preparations - look forward to reading your posts. 😃

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Cazza26

It’s 11 months away. What else are you going to do between now and then?

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Jay66UK

Stop it! I’m tempted.....just scared!

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Cazza26

Scared of what? You can run regular 5ks. I’ve run one once. You can do 10k by next May....I’ll help.

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Jay66UK

🤔

You’ve set me thinking......

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Jay66UK

And you know my history...... I might get lost or fall in the Irwell/Manchester Ship Canal.

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Cazza26

No, I wasn’t aware of this. Don’t do the run. Whatever you do... 🤣🤣🤣

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Jay66UK

Update..... you really did set me thinking....

I’ve signed up!!!! GULP!

😱

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Cazza26

Whoop! Whoop!!

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Jay66UK

I know! Still in shock! I mean, what’s the worse that can happen?? 🤔

Seriously though, I think it’ll really give me something to work at and be a great motivation. I keep thinking that I started all this in early April through the most glorious spell of weather I can ever remember..... hope I feel the same motivation on dark winter mornings!

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Cazza26

Same here. I may have to join a gym 😳

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Jay66UK

Eurgghhh!!! Hate gyms!

I live on a hill in an area that gets lots of snow..... I’m figuring that if I can’t get out for a run, I won’t fancy driving to the gym either!

Oh well - I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.....

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Cazza26

There’s 20 weeks after Christmas until the run (not that I’ve counted...). Some of them have to be alright 🤣

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Jay66UK

Yep, you’re right!

Twill be fine.....

Eiralas profile image
EiralasGraduate in reply to Cazza26

I started in January - and I actually quite enjoyed 'running' in the cold, once I'd got myself some proper running leggings without enormous holes in them (they were not so good 😳) and a warmer running top. It certainly made my walks brisk and I was dying for Laura to tell me to start running so I could start getting warm! Not sure how I'll feel if it's cold and wet though...

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to Eiralas

Chilly, I expect! I noticed how cold my hands were so I’m going to invest in some decent gloves.

Eiralas profile image
EiralasGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

Oh yes! Gloves and hat essential! How could I forget to mention them?!

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Eiralas

Yes - I can imagine it’s quite “bracing” running in the cold! I’ve yet to experience this. And any excuse for a few new running wardrobe purchases will be welcome, I guess!!

Will keep you posted....

Eiralas profile image
EiralasGraduate in reply to Cazza26

Once I'd got going it was fine, and quite refreshing. Just had to get through that 5 minute walk at the start. Enjoy shopping for your new running gear - and don't forget the gloves and hat!

Cazza26 profile image
Cazza26Graduate in reply to Eiralas

A hat?!!! Gosh, hadn’t thought of that. I don’t do hats..... but then again, a few months ago, I didn’t do running vests, capri pants or brightly coloured running shoes! And I wouldn’t have dreamt of pounding the streets of the neighbourhood at 6am wearing no make-up. What’s happening to us?!!! 😂

Eiralas profile image
EiralasGraduate in reply to Cazza26

Good things, that's what 😉

OMG good for you Jay! 👏👏👏. I’m so impressed. I’m still floundering around in the blissful aftermath of graduating to even think beyond my next run. I haven’t even peeked at other sites/forums/plans yet. Wouldn’t know where to start or look. I may be bothering you for info once I’ve had a few consolidating runs.

For now, you keep going, you are my inspiration and I am your follower 👍😂

Are you feeling stalked? 👀🤣

Plenty of time, nothing to worry about. I did several months of nothing but 5K consolidations following my graduation. Then I made sure I ran all 5Ks in under 30 minutes but that is in no case necessary. The point was to get stronger and more comfortable, minimising injury risks. Once I thought (felt) I was ready I moved on to 10K by using the 10% rule and got there soon enough. Then I did what I used to do with 5Ks. Consolidation. One easy, slower 5K run, then one 5K interval run, then a 10K run. Every week. Then I moved onto half marathon but that's another story.

Take it easy and in your own time. Look after you shoes, sleep, calorie intake, stretches, and whatever you do, don't push it, you're not a pro. Take care & enjoy!

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to mrrun

Great advice much appreciated.

mrrun profile image
mrrunGraduate

Oh, oh, oh....AND, don't forget, the longer the run the more you need to hydrate a day before. On the day of the run a glass of water will do the job, don't go too enthusiastic, your stomach wouldn't tolerate too much water before the event. But, as I wrote - plenty of time to get it right.
