Running in the rain

What does everyone wear for running when it’s raining? And how bad does it need to be before you declare an extra rest day? I’ve got to week 6 and today was the first time weather was dodgy but I decided I’d rather run in light rain today than in the storm force winds forecast for tomorrow here!

I work on the principle that I'll only get wet once, so I just get out there. And running in rain is kind of nice. And since I'm not a (couch) potato (any more) I won't suffer from osmosis and swell up.

Lightweight running jacket, if that.

Watch out for cotton teeshirts tho. Very wet cotton teeshirt plus unprotected nipples equals potential soreness and bleeding.

You're unlikely to be cold though..if that's any consolation...

I have wicking, quick drying polo shirts for hillwalking that I find are also very comfortable for running. I tend to run in joggers or similar rather than shorts though and I can see that being very uncomfortable when wet and staying soaked all the way home. Maybe I need to stop worrying about scaring the neighbours and invest in some shorts that won’t treble their weight when it rains!

You can also get very lightweight joggers. I think they term them "training pants" very thin synthetic material. I have some (mens) New Balance ones in S. Much, much lighter than fleece.

Cant put a link in... google new balance gazelle jogger...

Not exact. Mine are an older style I think from tkmaxx but very similar.

Laughed out loud there because I work with children with additional needs so on my planet the term ‘training pants’ has a totally different connotation!

I like running in the rain as long as my torso is dry- ish! - There is something so refreshing about being out there in the elements! I have a very light waterproof jacket which does the trick. I will eventually get round to buying a visor to keep the sun out of my eyes and the raindrops off my glasses!😃

I thought once about pulling my upper lip over my head but I kept bumping into things...

Yep the rain in glasses thing is an issue - was OK today as rain wasn’t heavy but something I’ll need to think about.

I started in February and ran through blizzards during the beast from the east. Only strong wind would stop me. Rain doesn’t bother me, even torrential. I’ve got soaked in ParkRuns running through giant puddles. I don’t wear rain jackets as I get too hot. I just get soaked. I kind of like it anyway.

I prefer a light rain. Keeps me cool, too hot in sun, I normally don a baseball cap. Keeps off face. Went out once in Heavy rain with rain mac on. Big mistake. It wasn’t fit for purpose and stuck to me lol. Now prefer light weight vest and another t-shirt.

In light rain I wear a light waterproof jacket over my normal top, but I'm not sure how that would work on a really hot day - I think I'd rather just get wet. I haven't run in heavy rain because I don't like running with soggy shoes. It doesn't usually rain hard all day, so maybe you could just wait until it eases off. I'd definitely rather run in rain than wind.

Ha ha Arthur, it’s one of the big conundrums of running. My advice is run in what you feel comfortable in. This time of year you can usually get away with a light jacket, but you may get too hot. Listen to your body.

Indeed - I’m just trying to work out what would be comfortable! I see all these waterproof ‘running jackets’ advertised and it hadn’t crossed my mind before that anyone would wear a jacket to run so I wondered what everyone else did. I do own hi tech lightweight waterproofs for walking and I’m not sure if running ones are much different other than maybe being a shorter length. But if it’s going to end up tied round my waist for half the run I think Id rather not bring it at all.

They won’t be much different probably- my running jacket is really a cycling jacket- it suits both perfectly! 😀

I’d consider a running jacket on the winter. But even then I run with a tshirt in anything above 4 or 5 degrees!

Normal attire for the temperature. We're designed not to melt in the rain. 😉

Admittedly I'm not keen to set off in heavy rain. I don't mind as much if it starts once I'm out there. If it looks awful I wait for a lull.😂

Arthur, the best waterproof fabric is skin.

Yes of course but I’d get arrested.

I started Bootcamp in waterproof jacket trousers etc in Feb by the time I was really into I was just in a tshirt leggings and as long as I was in waterproof trainers it didn’t matter snow frost anything for me as long as my feet are dry 👍

I tell my friend all the time...”rain is our friend” 😂😂 especially when getting too hot!

baseball cap (glasses-wearer) and otherwise thin layers (I'm all about the merino). My top tip is not to hang around in the rain once you're done (even more so in winter!)- do your cool down and stretches indoors, drying off.

I enjoyed a run In torrential rain tonight. Wish i had read this first as I would have worn a baseball cap for the spattered specs problem. Light weight rain jacket was too hot. I really didn’t mind at all as I had a hot bath to dream about.
