It is building up your fitness to comfortably be able to run for 30 minutes and to set the foundations for you to be a runner by habit.
If part of your question is “how on earth will I reach 5k” the answer is that most don’t. Three lots of 30 mins running is the final week.
Not really, no it's not about building speed, it is a continuation of what you have been doing, speed only comes after you have completed the full program in about 9 weeks, even that can be longer, there is no pressure on anyone doing C25K. The big change is in W5R3 whereas before that 20-minute run there were walking intervals, that 20-minute run gets you ready for week 6 onward where most of the program is running with no walks. Week 6 day 3 has 1/25 minute run, followed by week 7 which has 3/25 minute runs, those longer runs are for building pace and confidence in running, not speed, 'slow and steady' is the motto of C25K.
Definitely not about speed! In fact slow down. It’s about going for longer.

Go slow LoonyLoo, the first run of week 6 lulls you into a false sense of security, so nice and slow, but you've run this time before, did I remember to say slow. It really does work.
