Crisis at w5r3

I’m 63 and had a very senior moment when I started this. I was fit enough to keep up with 6 grandchildren but had NEVER run. I went into w5r3 thinking I couldn’t do it and with a fitter friend so went off too fast. Needless to say I didn’t manage it. Devastated. Should I repeat week 1since I miraculously managed 1 & 2 or plough on?

Go at your own pace and try again. I wouldn’t go back I’d just do the run I failed again. I run with my daughter, she’s faster than me but doesn’t pace herself so gets tired quickly. We’ve just started so new to this. Good luck with your next attempt.

Have another go at w5r3 and this time do it by yourself (with Laura or whoever your coach is) at your pace, not someone else's. That pace should be slow, slow and slower. Set out slowly - you can always speed up nearer the end if you want. And you should always go into a run in a positive mood, not easy I know, but thinking you can't do it sets you up not to do it and you've got this far so you absolutely can.

Have your rest day, make sure you are well hydrated (all the time not just on run days), pull,up your big girl pants 😄 And go do it - you absolutely can 👍🍀. Come back and post to let us know you are back on track.

Just repeat any run that you don't complete.

Have you read the guide to the plan? healthunlocked.com/couchto5... it is essential reading.

Go at your own pace and you will be fine.

Just repeat this run.. as IannodaTruffe says.. take it slow and steady and do it your way:) x

I think you just need to repeat W5r3 as that’s the one you didn’t quite complete. Just go really slowly and you will be absolutely fine. 😊😊🐌😁

Once I’ve had my coffee I’m about to set out. More positive outlook so hopeful this time.

You can do it! I once ran with one of my children who looked at me as if to say “when are we going to run?” So I tried to go faster and felt exhausted so I slowed down to my normal pace 🐌 and was fine. Go for it! Let us know how you get on 😊

Did it this morning. Slow but steady.

I just want to reiterate everything that's been said. Firstly though, congratulations on your journey so far. You WILL manage week 5 run 3 next time I'm sure, you've done the training for it, and you have it in you. Just don't go too fast.

I have a tendancy to get a bit giddy and set off too fast, like I did with my first parkrun this morning. Don't do what I did and follow someone else's speed, go at your speed, and then for this particular run, dial it back a little so you have something in reserve!

All the best, Neil

This was a practice run, and you learned not to go too fast. Have a rest day, drink plenty of water, and go again. If snails aren't nibbling your ankles then you aren't going slow enough ;-) If you go at your own pace then you can do it :-)

Thanks. I saw a few snails and wondered if I was barely running but actually passed a couple of walkers earlier in the week!

I've come to realise that while it often feels like you are running at a pace slower than a snail, you are actually going faster than you think :-)

Sybilw profile image

Does that still apply if you see an actual snail! It was very wet overnight 😆

Maybe it was a turbo snail ;-)

Don't be devastated, it happens. This is the problem when going off with someone who's faster, it's really best to do your own thing. You need to complete all of the runs, because they build you up gradually to go onto the next one's, you'll do it, but slowly.. remember, when you feel that toughness and mind gremlins, slow down more and push on through..😊

It happens. My husband tried to be supportive by coming on a run with me. It was a disaster! Although I managed to complete I was going faster than was right for me, felt terrible and tearful and disheartened as it was pretty obvious that he had loads more in the tank! Since then we have each run on our own and I have been fine and enjoyed it. Run to the beat of your own drum. Good luck! I

I think we have all done it! My daughter tells me I am picking up my pace and I pay more attention now. I also run with audible or podcasts to avoid unconsciously speeding up (this being a relative term). Slow and steady......you should be able to chat, not sing.

Go on your own at your own pace. I'm 64 and just completed the C25K and I'm no runner (or wasn't until now!). My Grandaughter says I run like an old lady, but that's fine by me :) it took me 10 weeks to complete, but that was also fine by me. Keep going, you can do it. 😀

Thanks - you sound like me (right down to the granddaughter). I told mine I run along the fields to avoid people and she agreed it was a good plan so that no one called 999 because a granny was running!! Well done yo you.
