Parkrun - when do people first do them?

I have found my local Parkrun, but not sure when to give it a go? I could incorporate one of my runs and walk the rest. What have you guys done? Advice please xx

Very interested to see what advice you get here. My hubby did c25k about 2 years ago and now runs park run weekly. He’s desperate for me and the kids to join him but I’m not feeling there yet.

I would have to take my son, more worried he won't do it, rather than me! 😂

I walked the first one completely. Then second one I did a couple of one minute runs. Then from week 3 I did the last run of the week in the ParkRun, including starting with the 5 min warm up. When I got to 28 min slots in the program I did the warm up before the start and started running with the rest, stopping at the end of the time and then I’d run/walk what I could til then end. Yesterday was my 8th and first one where I ran the whole lot - I’m going on to week 9 now but I felt I could push myself for that one! You should defo try it. The atmosphere is fab and lots of people walk. I particularly love watching the people with pushchairs, wheelchairs or dogs. Such a fab thing to do. Everyone is so supportive no matter what your level. ❤️

Thanks. I know I could just walk it, but think I will fit one of my scheduled runs in and walk the rest. Just have to be there at 8:30 on a Saturday morning - that's a challenge in itself! 😂😂

8:50 should do. It’s good as it doesn’t take anything out of the weekend.

That sounds great but I may try a park run in a couple of weeks time, you’ve inspired me to give it a go

You should! I go to Parkrun and combine a c25k podcast with walk and run to finish. You’re never alone or last because there’s volunteer tail runners behind you and you get cheered Home genuinely by the early finishers.

I will definitely give it a go

They are full of the loveliest people - people who understand how hard running is and do nothing more than encourage and smile the whole way around. The volunteers make it - soooo nice!

I have registered with my local park run and can’t wait to do it. My problem is my family trait of competitiveness, so I think I will want to run it all. So my plan is to do it after graduation. Then fist pumps all round. Well that’s the plan anyway but I’m only just at the end of W4 so the build up continues.

I am only just starting week 2, but I need to ride my initial wave of enthusiasm and keep pushing myself. I think running with others will make a nice change and help me complete each week.

Let me know how you get on because I need the confidence to give it a try

I may end up walking it, who knows, anyone can do it. I know I can do 3k in about 35 mins doing W2R1 then walking. I should do it all in under an hour. Go for it @oldladyruns

You can do them at any point in the program. Lots even have jog walk pacers. They are really great motivator.

Good for you, anything that will help you complete your journey 👍

No rules, it’s when you feel ready. Should really be re-named parkrun(or walk) but it wouldn’t be as catchy!!!

I have registered with Parkrun and for my son. C25K is my priority, but will see how I go next week and maybe have a go on Saturday. Thanks for all the advice x

Lots of people at ours do as you suggested an incorporate in into C25k. Others use the walk 1, run 1 pacer or the walk 1, run 3 pacer - anything goes, really. Personally, I didn’t try it till after I graduated because I didn’t think I’d be ‘good’ enough - but in hindsight that was completely daft and I wish I’d started sooner. Good luck and let us know how it goes 👍

I never have done one. My running is about relaxation and solitude, and humans tend not to contribute to either. ;)

On one occasion I found myself in my local park minutes before the park run kicked off. As

I didn't intend to run it or, worse, go home without running at all, I simply ran anti-clockwise whereby a few hundred people, some of whom were pushing prams, were running clockwise, towards me. And it was like that for full 5K, or 6 laps.

So, hang on, technically speaking, I DID participate in a park run, no?!

You were just missing being registered with a barcode, but yes! Sounds like you like doing your own thing though. Everyone's reasons for running are different. I just want to get fit, which in turn will help me lose some baggage - mentally and physically.
