Hey guys, I started running 8 weeks ago, and I've completed about 20 runs, all on the treadmill. For the past month I've been reaching 5k with one walking break in the middle.
I want to start running outside, but I'm worried I won't be able to zone out in the same way, and I know it'll be more of a challenge. How was it for you when you started planning your route?
And on a practical note, I've always run with music, not with the podcast - do you use an armband? Are there good headphones which stay in your ears?
I'm pretty young but up until now not very fit (other than walking) and my main impediment was always self-consciousness... this will probably be a bigger hurdle for me than taking up the exercise was!

I started the programme in the gym on a treadmill and didn't believe I'd ever run outside, but you'll be amazed. I was. Having got outside I was surprised at how much more interesting it was. You get a constantly changing scenery, and use your brain to think about which corner you're turning or what flower you've nearly trod on, or whether or not to jump over the puddle, run through it or round it, so often the time passes more easily than when the display of the treadmill is staring up at you.
Having said all that some people prefer to be indoors, I guess it's just a matter of taste, but it's worth a try. I was self conscious at first, but most people don't actually notice you anyway.
