Virtual Run paid for

Im all paid up for the stroke associations virtual Resolution 5k run. It can be done at any time during March so I’ve chosen to do mine on the 22nd which gives me enough practise time. I should if all goes to plan finish the c25k program at the start of March.

I have also signed up to do the Resolution Run 5k on 11 March 2018. I have already attracted some sponsorship for Stroke Association, which is an incentive.

However, my training was disrupted by the recurrence of an old back injury that caused me severe discomfort, stress and lost sleep. The only solution I could find was a cocktail of painkillers and whiskey. Not a good idea as mixing tablets and alcohol is never a good idea.

Ironically, I had reduced my alcohol consumption as part of my new regime of getting fitter, only to be back on the bottle due to pain possibly caused by the process of getting fitter!

The good news is that I am gradually weaning myself off the cocktail.

Whether it was the programme itself or the effects of the cocktail, I found myself getting confused by the NHS Choices Couch to 5K programme. I found it very difficult to measure the sections of 1.5 minutes (Weeks One, Two, Three and Four). And I also found it hard to switch between different of running and walking in the same session (Weeks Three and Four).

I therefore switched to the Stroke Association version of Couch to 5k and I find it much easier. Each day there are repeated patterns of fixed duration (say 4 minutes running and three minutes walking, repeated 4 times) and there is a fairly rapid progression (from doing 2 minutes running and 2 minutes walking repeated 6 times at the end of Week One, I am now doing 5 minutes running and 3 minutes walking repeated 4 times at the end of Week Three).

Hopefully the Stroke Association 5k will help me get fit enough to run the 5K on 11 March .

And I can then have a celebratory drink.

But not one of the cocktails!

Ive got some sponsors in the form of family who are kindly donating some monies, thought id better not ask work friends as i work for a different charity 😂 but having suffered a mini stroke and my nan passing away after having a stroke it means alot to me to do this even if it is on the treadmill in the gym.
