I need to give this a go, but I’ve got serious doubts!

My little ruby paws or feeling like rusty paws as I’m 63 and not done any workouts for about 20 years, I get out of breath when I walk quickly for 10 minutes, is this a no goer? Has anyone else been in my situation and manage to conquer this? I really do want to address this and go for it but I’m seriously suffering from self doubt:(

I started my running "journey" 4 years ago at age 67. Like you I hadn't done any exercise for decades and when I was younger, I couldn't run at all, even though I was in the Military! I started by walking briskly several times per week for about a month. Then I found the C25K programme - but like you, thought that it was too much for me. So I did this similar ( but easier) programme first mayoclinic.org/healthy-life... After I finished that, I started the C25K. Since then I have run and run/walked several thousand kilometres , including 3 half marathon "races" . I finished my last HM in April in 2hours and 23 minutes at age 70. I won my age group - I think it was because I was the only entrant in it!! :) These early training programmes gave me a great sense of satisfaction as I slowly completed them and I started to take pride in the fact that I had become a bit of a "freak" - a 70 year old running!! :)

Hi bazza, just saw on your page you’ve been going through the wars, I think you’re amazing and thank you so much for being so generous with your words for me yesterday, you were a big part of the reason for my run yesterday and if I could do even a quarter of what you do I would be happy, it must be frustrating to get to where you did get and then to be held back because of health issues but you will get back quickly so be kind to yourself I think you are brilliant x

I did it over 2 years ago at 60, it transformed me. My wife did it in 2016 at 61, but has had 2 serious health issues come on (not caused by running) since so not able to run for 18 months, but she did her first long walk yesterday getting back to full fitness without any problems, we believe her quick recovery is down to the fitness she gained from running.

So yes, At 63 if mainly healthy, it's well worth giving it a go..

Some of my senior friends on here will also recommend it..😊

Remember, slow and steady is key, a lot of newbies tend to go off too fast and get injured. You may find it so hard at the outset, it's just because your not used to it, push on through that feeling, and eventually you'll reap the benefits of you efforts, keep posting your progress..

I am 60 and started the programme just before my 57th birthday I just did a marathon on my 60th birthday all because of this life-changing programme. I had never run before and was obese and unhealthy. I had to overhaul myself because I felt terrible. Drinking too much was causing joint problems and I thought I was looking at a new hip. I gave up overeating and boozing, took up walking, and then when I was much slimmer took up the C25k programme. Had I known about it at the start I would have embarked on it earlier. A lady at WW class told me about it. I started straight away. I have loved it ever since and now run my legs off. I find I love racing! It’s not something you even contemplate at the start but once you do,it you’re hooked 😃

Don’t let age be a barrier! I feel like a young lass again. My husband mocked me when he found out I was running, which is why I hid out in the woods for months 😎 He’s not mocking me now 💪🏃‍♀️🙂

This programme is suitable for all ages as it builds up slowly. No need to push at all. Slower the better in fact! 😃👍🏃‍♀️
