I started today 5k. I'm 49, overweight and have fluid in my knees. Anyway. I only managed half the 1st run ( I enjoyed the walking part) maybe should have carried on walking for the final 10 mins. My running technique is terrible I find it hard to lift my feet off the ground. Any tips??

I have to strap my left knee because it is badly damagd and accumulates fluid if I dont. I cant offer advice about your running technique, though having your gait tested and getting proper running shoes for your specific way of running will help a lot. But I would like to say well done for tackling what, for many if us, is the most difficult week. I had to repeat week 1.

Stick at it and try again but slow as a snail.

I agree. Good shoes, strap up the knee and go slowly!

Welcome.

Read this and digest healthunlocked.com/couchto5... it should help you to understand how to approach the whole thing.

Persevere. Many people found that first week the toughest, but your body will adapt incredibly quickly and in just a few weeks you will be running for thirty minutes.

It works and you will love it.

Keep us posted.

Hi there. I would just stick with it.i started when I was 49 and had a dodgy knee.get some decent trainers .watch your technique so you run wisely. If necessary get some physio advice.run at your own speed.stick with it.repeat weeks if you need to.i went backwards on more than one occasion. I found it really helpful to do it with a friend for motivation. I have lost some weight which had a massive positive impact on my knees and running in general.i will be 53 this year and now can do 5k in 36 minutes. The feeling of achievement at every small stage should be savioured.good luck and enjoy it.xx
