Post first run

I have just completed my first walk/run, and my god do my shins hurt! I do feel sorry for my legs, I have quite thin legs and quite a large upper body so they’re holding a lot.

I got a few stitches during the run but I am proud to say I didn’t stop, although I paused the walk for 20 seconds at one point as my stitch during walking was bad and to stretch it out.

My plan is too buy some proper trainers and keep at it. The rain was a nice cool down also. Feel very proud, although I could have probably run at a faster pace.

I’ll post a selfie!

Well done.

You might find this useful healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

The commonest mistake is going too fast, which can make shins hurt.

As a new runner, there is no need to go fast for your body to develop. Build the stamina at a gentle jog and the speed will come later.

Enjoy your journey and keep us posted.

Well done. Running faster won't help.. it'll just make it worse. Speed is not important at the moment and can have a detrimental effect on your progression, so just put it to one side.

Good shoes are important, and spending money can certainly help one engage with things.. or is that just a bloke thing?

Being properly hydrated can help with stitches as can getting the breathing right. I think in later podcasts laura mentions about holding ones stomach taught while breathing in deeply and then relaxing the stomach as you breathe out in order to help a stitch. Dunno if that works but worth a try maybe.

Well done for starting the programme. I always drink a large glass of water before I run and I think that as well as going slow helps with stitch.

Well done KatieLauren 😊...

Just a gentle jog for the running sections is all thats required. Land lightly, head up, shoulders back and down...

Do some gentle leg stretching after your warm down walk while your muscles are still warm and drink water on your rest days as well as run days...

You are doing this..😊xx

Well done! I had the same problem with my shins at first, I've found lying on the floor with my legs up on a wall for at least 10 mins after a run really helps. Also, massaging the shins. Good luck! ☺

Well done - i suffered with Shin Splints in the first couple of weeks, and i highly recommend getting proper trainers, and really slowing it down, and the slowly speed up to the point you will find a pace where your shins dont hurt....

A few weeks down the line, you wont feel a thing.
