Started on Sunday just completed 3rd run. Enjoy sport but never been a runner 😔 however determined to do a 5k & 10k next year (I am 50 in January) however I have terrible problems when running with my calves... feel like they r seizing up n r quite painful? Any solutions or ideas on what it could be?? TIA

The wrong shoes? Running too fast... or landing too heavily. We do expect aches.. but not pain... so... stretching after each and every run and exercise too...

Mainly at this stage, take it slow and very steady!

If you are new to running then some aches and mild pains are inevitable for the first few weeks. They eased for me around Week 5.

Try these after every run, while muscles are warm and supple nhs.uk/LiveWell/c25k/Pages/...

Wearing proper running shoes fitted after a gait analysis done at a specialist running shop might ease the pain.

Running slower might make a difference and most new runners do run much faster than is optimal for their physical adaptation.

Good luck.

I am 50 and started the programme again this spring and developed first problems with my Achilles’ tendons and after that really bad pain calve muscle pain. One morning I tore my gastrocnemius muscle (was so sad I thought running wasn’t for me) . Saw a physio who gave me exercises to strengthen my calve muscles and also to strengthen my tummy and backside muscles.

So now when I go running I keep my tummy and backside muscles tucked / tightened and puts less pressure on my legs/ knees ...

Hope this is useful :-)
