Park run warm up

I've been following the c25k and continue to do week 9 (5 min walks each side of 30 min run). I'd like to do a park run but how do you fit in the warm up? Do you do this before the start or as part of the run? I still haven't done 5k even with 10 min walking and 30 running and I'm a bit worried it will take me ages longer than everyone else!

You can do either. If you haven't yet run 5k I would walk the first 5 mins as your warm up, which will allow the crowd to disperse and stop you setting off too quickly.

Remember to register online first and print off your barcode to ensure you get your official time.

Enjoy!

I did exactly this yesterday, Chris. W9R1 at a park run. I followed advice from here and started my warm up walk when the run was started. I walked for only a short time as the runners all disappeared very quickly. I started at my usual slow running pace and then maintained that until the end, I wish I had timed the warm up walk as the start time approached as it would have taken a little off my overall time for the 5K but it doesn't matter - I'll make a great improvement next time.

Good luck for when you do your park run.

They are making a real effort to make Park run as inclusive as possible to enable people who want to walk part of the course take part so don't worry about being slow. You can also check how long the slowest runners in your local one are as the latest results table is on line.

Really friendly atmosphere so go for it.

I can absolutely guarantee you won't be last, there is a 'tailwalker' who's job it is to be last and it doesn't matter how long it takes. Some people walk the whole thing, some people walk/run, everyone does their own thing, the whole point is to be active, not fast.

Do go, I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and hopefully you'll feel like me - my only regret is I didn't go sooner! There will be a 'first timers' briefing, and you won't be the only 'first timer' either....

Above all have fun, go along, join in and don't forget your barcode!

I love parkrun!

Take Millsie-J 's advice.. use the warm up as the first 5 mins of the run..it does not matter if you walk or run or both.. there will be all sorts of times and speeds.. you just go and have fun :)

Well! I have done three parkruns - and will do many, many more. I have only managed to run one in its entirety. I went out very, very slowly. There was only one person and the tail runner behind me. I kept on shuffling and, after a little while, I started to overtake the people who had gone out too fast. I didn't overtake many people, mind! Finished in 41.22. If you can start with a fast 5 minute walk and then run (in my case, shuffle) the rest you will absolutely not come last. Yesterday my run was shocking and I think I probably walked half of it - but I still didn't come last!!!!! My tip is to resist the urge to start running too fast after your five minute walk. This has been my downfall. I didn't even do it consciously but I think that when everyone seems so far in front of you, it just happens. Just plod. You will get applause and encouragement and it's the most wonderful experience. Run your own race and be proud.

I can't really add anything to what's already been said only that I agree with it.

Put Parkrun in your diary for next Saturday and let us know how you get on. You'll probably surprise yourself!

Go for it ... good luck!
