Overheating - is it just me?

Sometimes, when I'm running, my body could go on but I literally feel like I'm about to explode because I'm too hot and I feel I have to stop for fear of passing out. I drink a lot of water even on non-run days so it's not dehydration. Even if it's cold I wear capris, never long tights, and a thin top and I run slower than a snail (which I'm fine with) BUT I do not want to pass out so feel I have no option than to stop for a minute or two.

I'm hot most of the time:) I do wear leggings though except when it is really warm...but just a cool top... and I have just got a tank top with a racing back too!!

Are you breathing naturally, not thinking about it at all... many of us, particularly when we first started the programme used to almost unwittingly, hold our breath! The air quality is weird too at the moment... almost airless yesterday :)

Best to just stop and have a quick breather... :)

Stopping for a quick breather is a really good idea. I do it all the time 🙂 I have sweat wrist bands for face, neck and brow mopping and a man size hankie for when the going gets really wet 😃

Take a drink with you if you're not doing so 🙂

misswobble I have a dual purpose band that holds back my hair and mops up sweat (in fact, I have a whole collection of them!) but I am thinking about a sweat band but am worried about the Bjorn Borg look - you're probably too young to know who that is! I tend not to take water. I used to but I just find it gets in the way. If it's hot I try and run in the gym but even the treadmills are in front of the plate glass windows! I guess I just need to accept that I get hot and not beat myself up about getting hot. If I do run at the gym and then go and lie down to do my stretches I leave a perfect outline of myself on the mat - very similar to the way they draw round dead bodies in American gangster movies!

Hi, RebeccaSK ! I'm interested in your dual purpose bands. I gather my hair at the base of my neck with just an elastic thingy. The sweat seems to run down through my hair to that point. It's not a problem but I wonder if the bands you use would do a better job of soaking up the sweat. Are they specific sports bands or just ordinary fabric? Thanks!

I don't think they're specifically sports bands but that is what most people use them for. I found that the thin ones you can get constantly slipped off my head. These ones don't as long as you pull them far enough forward (to just cover your hairline). I get them from here hyggebands.com - they aren't cheap but they do stay put and my hair getting in my eyes used to drive me insane! If you hair is clean then they do slip off a bit at first but once there's a little bit of sweat too they stay put!

Ooh, aren't they lovely! No wonder you've got a few. Thanks for the heads-up (so to speak)!

They're amazing aren't they?! They do stop the sweat running down your face too

Ha Oldfloss ! When I first started I don't think I took a single breath whilst I was running! Now, however, I'm pretty good with my breathing. I listen to Michael and he says that as your runs get longer you must remember to take in enough oxygen and I think I'm pretty good at that aspect. I also breathe out of my mouth. I know lots of experts say you should nose breathe but it's not for me - I don't get enough breath if I do. It's not just running - I get hot all the time. I'm sweating even by the end of my five minute warm-up! I'm not quite ready to show off even more of my legs with shorts! Guess I just have to put up with it!

If hot stuff means puce, covered in sweat from head to toe, overweight and shuffling then yep, I'm hot stuff! :-)

And it's not even hot really! I either run in the gym with air con or I run outside when it's not hot. Ran outside yesterday morning and it was only 18 degrees - yet I still felt like I was going to overheat!

Hi Rebecca

I don't know your age but us girls of a certain vintage often have to manage a degree of over heating. Even way before the menopause I was always hotter than everyone else in the family and in a constant battle with Mr Wheels (turn the heating up, turn the heating down, up, down.....).

Sometimes just accepting that reality has helped me carry on and stopped the panic (why am I too hot, YIKES. OMG I'm going to DIE!) that in turn makes me increasingly hot and bothered a (and panicky etc etc)

Take it slow and steady and keep cool thoughts and that will help you through the peri menopause (if that's where you are) and beyond 👍😁👍

Ps sorry to mention the M word 🤔

44 so entirely possible Hidden - had never even considered that!

in reply to RebeccaSK

I was 40 when I hit the peri-M and it hit me hard with all sorts of symptoms. Feeling so hot was one of them and I would be sweating for no reason. Maybe a consideration? I control mine with hormone therapy which has removed most of the symptoms.

I might have a word with my GP - thanks both for your comments x

I feel exactly the same as you Rebecca - I do my runs on the treadmill in the garage and it's not particularly warm in there but I am always roasting! It's not breathing or aching legs or anything that makes me want to stop other than just getting so hot. Honestly I look like a tomato afterwards! I am 41 so perhaps peri is a reason?

I remember flinging duvets off and flinging windows open wide!!! And the bliss of a snowy cold night in winter when everyone else was in front of the fire... I was out in the garden! Over and done with really fast though :)

I'm 55 and your symptoms are exactly like mine. Beetroot red after 5 minutes, sweat dripping from me, and a headache if I don't take water every 10 mins. And I can't come to a complete stop because if I do I go dizzy. I'm pretty sure in my case at least it's menopause related. So if I'm running outside I have a backpack with a water holder in it, and an ice towel (you wet it, then shake it and it stays cold for at least an hour). And at the moment I'm trying sage tablets as they're supposed to be good for overheating, but haven't been taking them for long so it's too early to tell whether or not they're working! If you find anything else that works let me know please - I'll try anything!
