Back in week 5, when I first began to believe I might be able to complete C25K, I had an idea. We'd booked a weekend away in my old hometown in NWales - a week after I should graduate if all went to plan. I thought it might be fun if I could run the length of the prom and back – just about 5K. A great post graduation run to aim for. At that point it all seemed a bit of a dream. But yesterday I actually did it. My first actual full 5K run.
Based on previous home runs I figured around 33 minutes should be enough, so it wouldn’t be too much of a step up from the week 9 runs.
Well! I hadn’t factored in the wide empty promenade at 7am (no dogs, no pedestrians to be swerved around), the sheer flatness of the route (no inclines, no tree roots, no potholes, no kerbs) and the simplicity of an out and back again route. Not to mention the wonderful view. The only thing not in my favour was the headwind on the way back (though having benefited from a tail wind on the way out, I can’t complain). My final 5K time? 31m37s. I was SO chuffed. Still am
Back to the real world now, and I’m sure it will be a long while before I see a time like that again. But that’s OK. Still can’t believe that someone as averse to running as I have been for over 50 years, finds myself here. Nothing short of a miracle! If I can do this, almost anyone can. To anyone who has yet to graduate, stick with it and enjoy.
P.S. By this morning the promenade had been transformed into the Llandudno Sea Triathlon route - so glad I didn't put my run off for a day !!!!!
