But I'm starting to feel it a bit in my knees now - just feeling it a bit the day after, nothing too horrendous. I have been running in a tatty old pair of trainers so know I need something better.
Any advice? I'm planning on building to 10km over the summer (but think that will be my limit!)

Go to a proper running shop. Google for some near you and find the best one using the customer reviews. You can get a feel for the place by their website perhaps. These stores are staffed by runners, triathletes, running coaches, physio trainees and such like so know running.
When you buy from them you can take them back if for any reason you don't get on with them, cos you can never really know if they are going to suit you til you've run in them a time or two.
They can analyse your gait and from there narrow down the best shoe for you and your purpose. Try lots on!
I went to the Up and Running shop local to us. Staff were excellent and used the gait analysis system and showed me about four pairs of shoes and then recorded me running in them to check if they were suitable. I had experienced pain in one of my knees with the shoes that I did have but the new ones eliminated the pain. Hope this helps.
I've been to my local Up & Running too - can't praise them highly enough. I was dreading going in the first time - overweight, middle-aged, so worried they were going to smirk at the idea of me running. But I couldn't have been more wrong - they were encouraging, supportive, and found me a lovely pair of shoes which served me well for the next 300 miles
