Just as things are getting good......

Long post alert!

Well as you may know i've finally graduated and started to love running, had a phone call this morning from the consultants secretary - I'm booked in for surgery on the 28th on March! I know I'll be out of action for a minimum of 6 weeks :( but consultant said provided that my I can cope with the pain I may have from the slight jolting to my shoulder that I should be able to start running again after 6 weeks (gently).

I've decided that I'll probably need to go right back to the beginning, week 1 run 1 as I imagine 6 weeks of doing next to nothing will kill any fitness I've built up, but hopefully my amazing hubby will try and start running again with me, he's been doing lots of strength and flex stuff to help his knees, so maybe, just maybe he can ditch the bike and run with me.

I only started the program because I knew surgery was coming and I wanted to get as fit as possible beforehand, plus I couldn't do any of my normal strength stuff, not been able to for almost a year, BUT, I'm so upset about coming this far and having to stop, I actually honestly cannot believe just how much I've come to love running now.

If anyone else reading has had rotator cuff repair and subacromial joint decompression I'd love to hear from you as I'm dreading the op and the pain afterwards, not to mention the loooong recovery time.

Hey ho, onwards and upwards, it needs fixing and I can always lurk about on here post surgery and at least I can type one handed :D x

You may well be pleasantly surprised about a residual level of fitness provided you convalesce well.

Good luck with the surgery and recovery!

I have no idea what the recovery will be like but I'd guess that you can start walking 5K before 6 weeks and also you have the benefit of knowing that you are a runner and have the target of getting back to running again. I hope the surgery goes to plan and best wishes for your recovery, I'm sure it won't be easy but you'll come out of it better than ever.

Thank you Now-runner_NeedsAttn :) I'll be walking the very moment I feel up to it and I aim to start gentle running again asap - I know I'm going to go a little bit stir crazy if I don't do something active.

Much appreciate the good wishes.

I hope everything works out with the surgery.

In terms of your running, it would be a small setback but you certainly wouldn't need to go back to week .

Thanks Dunder2004 I hope it doesn't set me back too much.

Ho giddy aunts sorry to hear this. I had ASD surgery 18 months ago. The pain was quite bad rhe first couple of days tjen it wasn't so bad. They will give u physio exercises to do straight away and even though it really hurts, it's really important to do them religiously. Work through the pain. I'd say 6 weeks is the maximum time u will be recovering. Best of luck xx

Hey annie1970 thanks for the reply, Im not sure what ASD is? I really hope you are right, consultant says I'll not even be allowed to do any active movement of that shoulder for at least 6 weeks or I may pull the anchors out! Only passive movement guided by physio, he's telling me it will be much longer than that before I can consider riding my beloved horse again as in months not weeks, so I really hope that I can start running again asap afterwards otherwise I fear I may go slightly potty (more than normal) thank you for the good luck wishes, I feel I am going to need lots of that. x x
