I'm just dropping by to let you know the good news and bad news...
The good news is that the hospital discharged me from their care today at my check up on my stress fractures (both ankles!). No more air boots and crutches!
I have just been told to make sure I don't overdo it and work out what, if anything, causes pain and avoid that for a bit longer. I can go back to Aqua aerobics and then build up to other exercise - bike, cross-trainer, dancing etc (as long as I don't fall off my dance shoes).
But - no running again - ever! The consultant said that if I got bilateral stress fractures after only 20 minutes and building up sensibly, then that suggests my skeleton just isn't suited to it and that I should just pick a different exercise. It doesn't mean I have osteoporosis, but he really didn't think I should try again.
So I guess I just have to take his advice - what I might do is do 5K on the cross trainer when I am better.
I want to say thank you to everyone who has sent me encouraging messages along the way, especially Ullyrunner, McFitty, Irishprincess and Irish John. I wish you all the best with your running - and I will think of you all. I might drop in from time to time to see how you are all getting on.
I still believe in C25K as a programme - in a way I am quite relieved at what the consultant said because he didn't seem to think I had done anything silly in trying the programme - it's just that I found out the hard way that running is not for me. I'm gutted, but I will just have to go and find a new passion - now, what can I do in loud running gear?!

That is very sad news indeed Nailelectric. I hope you find something to equal the endorphin high. It can't be exclusive to running - something else is out there that will pump up your motor without breaking your bones. I bet there are qualified people who can answer that satisfactorily for you and I bet, with your good attitude, you will be in the swing of something before too long.
I wish you every good thing in the future, will miss seeing your posts - but I know you will continue "onwards and upwards" now in life and a new venture.
Sorry to hear that Nailectric. Glad of course that you are discharged and healing but sorry that the running was the cause and that you will have to avoid it in future.
I'm sure you'll find an alternative that you can enjoy just as much. You could always do C25K on the cross trainer. I'm sure somebody on here did that recently.
I'm so sorry to hear your news, when I was out of action I took up speed walking as at that time it was the pounding that I wasn't allowed to do but with speed walking you don't get that. I did the couch to 5k again but built up my walking speed and am now at quite a good speed walking pace and I get to wear all my running gear for it as well. It's fresh air, raised heart rate and softer on the joints, I can even do events with speed walking as well. I did sports relief this year 10km in 1:32 mins. Good luck in whichever way your exercise takes you.
What a shame. Glad you found out in time to avoid worse harm but still...
Him Indoors is a cycling addict but that's the result of trashing his knees when he was young playing football. He abandoned football and took up running but his knees couldn't take it as the damage was done. But he's taken to cycling in a big way and it's brought him much joy.
Sorry to hear that you can't continue with your running. Have you thought of taking up rowing or sculling? Great sport, great people. I wish you well in your other sporty pursuits.
Aww that's a real shame. I hope you find "your" sport, and no matter what it is, I'm sure the principle of starting slow & building up strength & stamina is a good one. 😀
Really sorry to hear this Nailectric. I understand how you feel because I am currently on the IC again and hoping I don't have to give up running. Hope you are back to full fitness soon and that you find a new sport that you can be passionate about. Tennis or badminton might be good options. Take care xx
