So are we loving the colder weather folks?

We were so yearning for the weather to turn cooler all summer so we'd enjoy our running more. Now the cooler, wet weather is here. Are we loving it?! I'm not really.

Good for you. I'm finding it a bit dark and creepy but boy summer was hot.

I don't mind the drop in temperature too much, like you say it makes running a bit more comfortable. However I don't like the fact that it's getting darker earlier and earlier, especially as I am an afternoon/evening runner.

It is dark in the mornings too Rosie. Where I run I wouldn't feel safe in the late afternoon in the dark. I think early in the morning it is less likely weirdos will be around but I am probably kidding myself. Most of us can only run very early or late though. I'm running in a club on Monday in the evenings, safety in numbers and all that. Seems every season has its running challenges!

You're right, I'might having second thoughts about my usual route now that it's darker. I run part of the way along a cycle path, which does have streetlights but does also have a lot of dark corners, and you don't know who might be hanging around! Saying that, the other evening the only thing I had to watch out for were the bats flying around!

Ooh that's so spooky but it is kind of cool too. Funny how darkness makes a place creepy which would be really pleasant in daylight.

Yes I am loving it ! The only thing I forgot is that it is getting dark really early now and I was terrified of falling and crocking myself before my HM !

Ive done with my training now so I will be heading out with my head torch . The only thing I wont run in is ice .

Still in my short sleeved T shirts at the moment as I still get too hot ! :-) xxx

I've been thinking about getting a headlight. No streetlights where I run and it is only going to get darker. How do you get on with the headlight? Doesn't it slip when you run?

I'm in the long sleeved, long-legged gear now and the hat!

Heavens yes! I just can't run in the heat. This is the perfect time for running - cool enough for gloves but no slippy ice. I'm happy.

It was really tough this summer - mind you it was my first running summer. It did seem extra hot this year though. Would be nice running in a "normal" summer though I think.

Love it! Like Poppy I'm still going out in short sleeves...and shorts!

You lot are so hardy! My shorts are packed away already. Hopefully they'll be too big when I next unpack them :)

I love this time of the year for the temperature, like others not so keen on the warm weather but again I live in the country, with no street lights between villages so being put off a little have got my reflective jacket etc but the headlights on cars are a nightmare end up having to stop to look away, next purchase i think is a light.

Happy Autumn Running Guys

I'm thinking about trying a headlight but can't imagine it being very comfortable. Will feel like a miner heading off for my shift.

I agree, my husband has one for fishing but its very bulky around the back, i think it might just wobble off while I'm running but Ive been doing some research and a lot of people recommend this one as it sits on your chest

I've just got one of these, only run once with it but I was impressed by it's brightness (there are 3 settings), and the rear red flashing light is good too. 💡😅

Is it fiddly to get in and out of? I like the look of it.

Scruffy64 profile image

Yes it does doesn't it, but it only took a few minutes to adjust the fit, and lock the power cable in place, now I can just put my arm through and do up the clip, very simple. I tightened the strap once when running but no hassle, and I really can't feel it once it's on 😊

Oh I am! 😊

I had a race in great weather today. Luckily! ☺

A proper runners head torch won't slip down cos they are not heavy. LED is small but powerful. The Petzyl ones are very low profile so sit nice and flat, as does my LED Lenser. Under £20 ☺

Which LED Lenser do you have, please ?

Do you find the batteries run out quickly? I'm going to try and order that chest one clawmum linked to if I can get it here, being overseas.

Loving it... a beautiful time of the year. After what, for me, as many of us, was a very hot summer, it is bliss. Still warm enough for t-shirts. now though...not shorts:)

The increasing darkness in the morning, can be a tad problematic, but I stick to my fields and tracks..it never occurs to me that there may be weirdos out there.... I wear my wrist alarm... who would hear it, not sure?...Like poppypug , I will avoid icy mornings, ( not a problem yet).

It is hard to draw the line between being cautious and being paranoid but there are definitely plenty of weirdos about here! I take pepper spray if I run in the dark but you're in a bad place if an attacker wrenches it off you and turns it on you. I also don't run with music in the dark so I can hear what's going on around me.

I'm starting to sound like a nutcase, aren't I?!

No...just sensible and a realist :)

I get soooo hot running so I appreciate it but I think you need to ensure that you are properly warmed up before actually running.

boptillyoudrop49 profile image
boptillyoudrop49Graduate in reply to Donkeywhistler

Think you run faster than me. I don't get hot unless the day is hot.

Ok but I do prefer the long days and when it rains now it's horrible. I haven't run in the dark yet but will have to very soon.... probably wouldn't worry me if I didn't work full time. I'm really not looking forward to the proper cold weather when I have to wear something more than shorts and a t-shirt.

Oh no I sense a gremlin lurking probably because I'm looking out at my dark, damp, rainy garden at 09:45 on Sunday morning :-( Thank goodness it's a rest day.

Birthday soon so I have to choose between a head or body torch. I was going to ask for a Garmin but, for the price, I'm happy enough with Mapmyrun at the moment and I'll always take my phone out. I ramble. Have a good Sunday.

boptillyoudrop49Graduate in reply to 1903

I've decided to get that body torch. Hope it isn't a faff to get in and out of. Don't go giving in to the gremlins. I think rainy days are when they come out in hordes. Had a really nice run early this morning and after a hot shower and a cup of tea, you feel brilliant - till you have to go out again! I like a bit more sunshine too. Goodness knows how they get through the winter in places like Finland where I think it is darkpractically the entire time. Must be grim.

LED Lenser Neo head torch in neon blue. They come in various colours as does the Petzl ☺

Actually that looks pretty good missw. Might get both the body torch and one of those, blind everyone in sight! Which do you prefer - this one or the petzl?

I have the lenser neon one but that was the one my husband bought me. ,it was a toss up between that and the petzl ,,Tea fairy rated the neon so I went with that. ,do check out both. The peyzl comes in funkier colours but does it matter when it's dark 😊

boptillyoudrop49 profile image
boptillyoudrop49Graduate in reply to misswobble

Thanks. No, the colour doesn't really matter to me. I will consider both then. It was dark for the first 20 min of my run this morning, so will really be needing something soon.
