Hi Slinky - can't help on the men /women running shoe question but I found a new balance running shoe that fits my wide feet beautifully. I think it might be a special wide fit shoe as the number starts with 'w'! Good luck!
I wear Asics men's shoes (I am female) as they give my toes more wiggle room. The only disadvantage is aesthetics as they are not in girly colours! I would say choose your shoes for fit and function. Mine are green and grey but I love them for carrying me through C25K..
I have a lump on one foot that is painful in runners, I got some really good help from Sweat Shop, when I doubted I would ever find shoes that didn't hurt. I got Mizuno waves, they have a lot of room in the toe box. Another shop previously gave me mens Brooks adrenaline, I didn't like them, they felt really clonky...that's not to say all mens shoes would be like that. Have you asked your local sport shop?
I've heard women's tend to be narrower in the heel than men's but I've got some men's NB574's for casual wear - because they'd run out of women's - and they fit me perfectly (maybe I've just got fat heels). I can't see any reason at all why you shouldn't try on a few men's pairs and see how they feel. Also there aren't many trainers available for women who need larger than an 8 so presumably they wear men's without a problem...
Hi slinkyminky, I have had men's shoes because I have hobbit feet - very wide across the ball of my foot and large, at a size 8 ladies'. Inn addition to this, I over-pronate quite drastically so it cuts my options down even further. The women's running shoes don't fit me at all because they are too narrow. I've had New Balance which are quite wide in the toe box but the pair sweatshop sold me were actually half a size too small and I've had uncomfortable toes on longer runs. I'm back to Brooks Adrenalines now in the men's because I find them much more comfortable, but you can get different fittings in them. I don't have a problem with the heel slipping but I lace them with the loop over the last two holes so this solves that problem.
