I'm sure you all do but I just wanted to make a plea to wear your helmets... Here is why...
I had a desperate phone call yesturday morning from my husband who cycles to work and back daily ( it's about 22 miles). He had slipped on black ice, come off his bike ( no helmet) and banged his head badly . He had no idea where he was for me to find him, and there were no people about. He couldn't even work out how to dial 999 by this point ( he was clearly very confused) Thankfully a wonderful man called Steve found him, called the ambulance and they stabilised him, spoke to me and I got there. By this point he was very unwell and so confused he could barely speak.
He had X Ray's and CT scans at the hospital, and they kept him in the resus area. Thankfully all tests were clear, they were convinced he'd had a bleed. By the evening the confusion was easing off and they let me take him home where I have to keep a really close eye on him as he could still become very unwell again. That was not a good day and could have been avoided had he worn a helmet. I'm relieved he is alive.....
Take Care out there

Oh my goodness Juicyju, i am sorry to hear that. I hope he is fully recovered soon. I cycle quite a bit and always wear a helmet. My son was hit by a car cycling down a quiet residential street - the paramedics said his helmet (and his laptop in his back pack) saved his life. I would add - please make sure your helmet is fastened on properly.
Really hope he gets better soon, what a shock for you.
What an awful experience... I feel very strongly about cycle helmets and have been known to shout at my sons' friends. I perhaps wouldn't say this in response to someone whose professional background I didn't know could take it, but the image that haunts me is the sadness of the grandfather whose grandson whilst learning to walk and talk again on a paediatric neurosurgery ward after a severe no-helmet cycling head injury and making good physical progress no longer had the same personality.
I hope it is recovery all the way after this (for both of you, it must have been and probably still is, traumatic)... and a helmet.
I know exactly what you mean. I used to be an ED nurse and some of what I saw was terrible. He should have known better, I don't know what came over him...
So sorry to hear about hubby, must have been a very worrying time for you , here's to a full and speedy recovery xx
That's terrible JJ. You must have been worried sick, but I'm so relieved to read your husband is ok. Thank goodness for that angel called Steve. Sending your husband healing thoughts and you calming ones. x
Oh that must have been so scary jj. I do hope your husband recovers well and is feeling better today.
Absolutely right about helmets. We have a family member (sisters stepson) who very nearly lost his leg when he was hit by a van one evening - this despite lights and a helmet. He believes he owes his life to his helmet and the backpack he was wearing as he was thrown over the top of the vehicle. All very sobering thoughts. Thank you for posting and best wishes to you and your family.
Bless him, hope he fully recovers. I always do wear my helmet nowadays and it looks fine and does the job. Good to remind us that our safety comes first, as for runners, we need to make sure we let people know where we are going and expected return time, take our phones too so if we get stuck, we can call for help
Hope he gets better soon - it's a bit frightening when something like that happens. I always wear a helmet - and I'm pretty sure it saved my life once. There was a steep hill with steps. Instead of completely getting off and pushing from the side I just hopped off the saddle and sort of walked it up. And then suddenly my feet couldn't get a grip either side and the bike tipped backwards. My head hit a wooden fence. After cursing myself for foolishness I got myself sorted out and set off again. Then I realised my helmet was knackered. I got a bit shaky after that and headed straight back home. What would my head have been like without a helmet? In fact I was fine. And a lesson was learned.
I do know first-hand how invaluable helmets are being a cyclist & motorcyclist, when I had pedestrians run across the road in front of my motorbike and hit one and I came off and hit the side of my helmet on the ground which would have been the temple, but I sustained no head injuries thanks to the hat, just a blow to the shoulder which took a couple of years to get right again... Wrote the bike off though, so when he's better give him a good lecture in helmet safety..take care.
Oh no, so sorry to hear it. Good to hear that someone took the time to help him. Best wishes for his recovery, that must have been so frightening for you both x
That is soooo scary ! What an horrible experience for you . I walk to work everyday and on Thursday it was so icy , it was treacherous . There's lots of cyclists passing me and it struck me of how vulnerable they were if they hit a stretch of ice .
Hope he's okay , things like this shake you to the core don't they ?
Sorry to hear that Ju. Hope he's feeling better this morning. Make sure he wears it from now on. xx
Having said that my OH has never once hit his head in all the times he has fallen/been knocked off bikes, both motor and pedal. He would, however, never go on a motorbike in shorts or without gloves. Just the luck (or not) of the draw I guess.
Bit late to this but I do hope your husband is ok now Ju! What a fright you've both had. He'll wear his helmet from now on I dare say. I hoped you've all calmed down a bit. What a to-do!
Late responding Ju so I hope your hubby is much better now but what an awful shock, for him and for you! I see several cyclists without helmets on and always worry about them as it doesn't take much and sometimes not their fault at all if there's an accident Hope you're both recovered x
That's a real lesson to everyone that crash helmets really are essential, I know you can't avoid every injury through wearing them but they give you a much better chance should it happen.Hope he is recovering well juicyju and that you are ok too, such a stressful thing to go through. Take care both of you xxx
Hope he continues to recover JJ. what a fright! Helmets are annoying and uncomfortable but the alternative is so much worse... My son came off his bike in similar fashion while cycling with his club today. He got away with scrapes but his mate ended up in hospital. And they were wearing helmets. The road is unforgiving. And the best bike riders are vulnerable in winter conditions.
Just seen this Ju and am so sorry to hear. What a shock for you both. I hope your hubby is feeling better now. A good reminder to everyone to wear their crash hats! Xπ
as a fellow cyclist (or rather will be again soon) I do hope he is recovering well. I have had several minor accidents and as a result of wearing a helmet, I have not had any head injuries.
