W1R1 last night with my little boy William...he’s been getting a bit paranoid about his weight, he’s got a very good appetite but, as with a lot of kids are now, he doesn’t do enough moving around, so he’s been asking me for a couple of weeks if he can come running with me but when it’s come round to it it’s rained or there’s been something more interesting crop up, but last night, me all ready in my running gear all set for a run, he came down in a mish mash of sports stuff & gave me a look with his big puppy eyes....Ok, W1R1 it is then eh?? So we went across to the park where the boot campers were warming up and started our 5 min warm up walk...we were chatting away as we walked briskly towards the back field of the park where my own journey began...obviously, I chose Mr Smooth, (I want him be a smoothie like me!) and when he said it was time to run, off we went....nice & steady...he did so well....I remembered when I ran this run & how Flippin hard it was, it was no pleasure at all....then all the encouragement that I’d got from everyone on here came flooding back....there was the ‘Oldfloss’ Bush...all the funny things that have happened in the park while I’ve been running...police helicopter etc....the tears of frustration & the tears of elation I’ve shed there have kept the stream running!!!

I was telling William all about this as were we’re running along nice & steady, his little face was getting redder by the second, just like his Mum!! By the time we’d run the 5th 60 sec run he’d got a stitch but he kept on running & I was telling him to breath through it...when Michael told us that we only had one more run to do his pace quickened & I could see in his little face how pleased he was with himself ...when he’d done it, we high fived & I gave him a big hug...I truly hope that he sticks with it, he seems very enthusiastic, I’m looking forward to going again tomorrow night...he is convinced that he looked different after just one run!! I hate the fact that he’s paranoid about himself I just know that running will do him the world of good & my role in life is to raise my 3 children to be happy, content, loved & certain of who they are....his aim is to do the newly formed junior park run over at the park on Sunday morning...So here’s to William & his determination...& his gorgeous little face when he’d finished his very first run....

I still went for my run while he got a shower & I opted to repeat W5R3...I know, who’d have ever thought they’d choose to do this run??!! Happy running everyone...xx

Way to go little William! This is so so heartwarming, MC. What a lucky little boy to have such a supportive mum like you. You have obviously inspired him, as you have so many of us on here. It is sad that he is worried about his weight, when is is still but a wee bairn. Perhaps you could encourage him by focussing on how strong running will make him? Strong and powerful like Captain America! xxx

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toSadie-runs

Captain America...I like that!! Yes, I did say to him that running is also about having fun & about making him feel strong inside...thank you...he’s just gone 10 so yes, he’s still just a little boy x

in reply toMummycav

My daughter (17) says that her new motto is "Strong not skinny!" There is so much pressure on them now to look a certain way.

You are such a great mum Mummycav and a brilliant role model for William.. I think Rfc has a special Graduate certificate for youngsters too... and there is the actual c25k badge you can buy for £6.. (I realise I'm getting a bit ahead of things...but do so wish the best for William and hope he loves his new running fun!) 😊xx

No pressure..here is the link to the badge in case you want to think about it...

c25kgraduatebadge.co.uk/

Remember, youngsters have little legs, so the aim is not for 5k...

MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toBluebirdrunner

Honestly Jan...you must be psychic!!! William absolutely thrives on certificates, badges...any praise at all..I don’t know why but his glass has always been half empty rather than half full...i haven’t done anything differently with any of my children but it continues to surprise me how they can all be so different even though they’ve had the same??? He just need a little bit more tlc & praise than the other two do certificate & a badge sound perfect, thankyou x

Well done on the recruit! It was my 15 year old daughter that got me into running last year, but she stopped after just 2 outings while I of course didn't :)

Yay! That is so great Mummycav! Here’s hoping you end up with a permanent little running buddy. I really enjoyed my family fun run last week. We haven't managed another yet, but hopefully soon. What a bunch of great role models we’ve become 😁😉

this is lovely 😊 well done William you are going to smash it. I do my runs with my son who is 10 and he keeps me going. Keep at it William - having our boys running with us keeps us Mums going 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🤗

Thankyou...I’ve never run with anyone before as I like the solitary feeling but I loved running with him yesterday & yes, they do keep us going 😊

Fantastic, what a great role model you are :) rubs off doesn't it? Just shows how much our kids do watch us (even though they act like they don't!!).

My daughter wants to come out with me on Saturday and start c25k. I've said I only do early but she's ok with that!! Seeing as she spent the Easter hols slobbing out in her pit and not getting out of bed if she could help it, I suppressed a rye smile. The wonders of running strike again! It'll be a gentle way of getting back into it again for me too :)

Wow, well done to William, and well done you for being there for him. Hopefully he'll enjoy the programme and experience a great sense of achievement as so many of us have. It'll get him ready for joining in athletics at school later this term too.

Good luck both of you for run 2.

This is great! When I graduate I’ve promised my boys that they can start running too. My 9 year old has some co-ordination difficulties and literally gallops instead of running so I’m hoping some regular running will improve his technique and make him less self conscious. My eldest ( also a William!) is keen to start too so now I just need to work on the husband!!! Congratulations to your young man. I look forward to hearing about his progress!

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate

Hi NJGam ...I’m sure it will help your son with his co-ordination, it certainly won’t do him any harm...and getting him into a comfortable pace will help him control his speed, I find that William likes to step at the same time as me so I can control the pace he runs at otherwise I think he’d run too fast & he wouldn’t enjoy it as much if he tired too soon...it sounds like you’ll be running as a family in no time!!! Your Hubby might not need any persuading when he sees you and your Sons enjoying yourselves!!! I’m looking forward to reading all about it!!! 😊 x

NJGam profile image
NJGamGraduate

Thanks lovely. We had a go at a mummy & sons run yesterday but the older one was a bit of a distraction so I think I’ll take Matthew out on my own next time. It’s hard at the moment as I still need to complete my scheduled runs (3 more weeks!) but we’ll hopefully have more time after that. Would love my boys to get the running bug. They have energy that needs burning!! Hubby is just thinking of the peace and quiet he’ll have if the rest of us are out on a run!!! Keep us updated on William ‘s progress. x

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toNJGam

Thank you, I will, he’s done me W2r1 tonight...all’s good so far. He’s also started doing the mile a day that some primary schools have started doing, they set aside 15 mins at the beginning of the day so that will help. You keep me posted on your Mum/Sons runs too 😉 x

Well done William! Running gives me such a buzz I wasn’t expecting, which I’m sure William will feel, all great for our mental wellbeing, we’re all part of this very special club of runners (no one needs to know how slow we are running)😂😂
