Things I have learned today... Sports bra's are important, especially those that "sweat-wick" (*nice*); running into hailstones really hurts and if I watch my feet (who knew they could jog? Not me) I get back ache...it's all a bit new.

As for sports bras, I am rather big-boobed and the only sports bra I have found which is really, really magical is the Enell. It is amazingly comfortable, really well-made and completely banishes all jiggle!

Bra and waterproof, bouncy running shoes - the most important accessories!

Ha! I'm fairly "self-supporting", so would normally be delighted with even a hint of a jiggle, it's no fun on a run though!

Sports bras are essential and I'm always amazed at how many women I see running who clearly don't wear one! Ouch!

Your back could just be a bit tight as you are new to running but make sure you stretch after each run and consider taking up Pilates as that's great for the back. Also, when you are running don't lean forward too much as this puts pressure on the back.

I think you're right, it's the leaning forward that's making my back hurt, haven't done pilates for months, so booked in on Weds pm, just the shove I needed :-)

My sports bra is from Marks and Spencers, they have a pretty good range. They explain all on the card what the bra is good for, e.g. something more easy-going like yoga, or something more vigorous like running. It cost me around Β£25, but it's a sound investment.

Hope your back sorts itself out! And well done for getting out there today despite the horrendous weather - I'm sure a lot of people are putting their runs off until tomorrow!

Thank you, but believe me, if I'd known it was going to hailstone I'd have put it off til tomorrow too πŸ˜‰ Px

Probably best not to put it off.. as long as the hailstones don't get too large :)

Well done you for getting out there..! :)

Well done for getting out and doing your run.... :) try to look ahead and run tall rather than lean forward. This will help open your chest out for more air too.. (I think :) ) sports bra essential, plus soon you could treat yourself to some lovely running socks. They are really comfy in all the right places. Keep going you are fantastic. :)

Aww! This made my day, I have been browsing running kit, going to have some as a treat at week 4; I suspect Lycra is not socially acceptable for women over 40, but I should be ok with some socks πŸ˜‰

Ouch! They say you should experience everything in life... but running under hailstone is definitively one of those experience I'd gladly pass. XD

You are right about not looking at your feet; runners should look at the horizon and beyond, with runner's pride! :D

Jokes aside, keeping the head high and looking in front of you helps you maintaining your spine in the correct position... not to mention it drastically improves the chances to avoid a collision ;)

in reply to secan

If I collide into anyone running slower than me, they're likely to be immobile and I should probably stop and help them!!

The world is full of slower runners than us newbies: trees, lampposts, benches, ... :D

The back ache can also be from your arms being tensed up. Try shaking your arms every now and then to relax them and your shoulders.
