I made the decision in July 2015 that dieting doesn't work for me although I do eat fairly healthy. My son just turned 18 and like me is around 5 stones too heavy. So starting c25k was for us both. I've run 20 years ago in the army so mentally I'm prepared, I'm at week 5 D3 which I tried yesterday but didn't make it, no problem I still ran further than I had before, jordan my son I'd at w4d1.

Hello there. Welcome to C25k. You've started so that's the biggest hurdle out the way. If your son sees that you are committed then it will be easier to keep him going. If you go nice and steady you'll finish this. Bear that in mind as you'll maybe need to rein yourself in as it's easy to get carried away when you find your running legs. So, tortoise rather than hare

You say diets don't work for you. They will if you choose the right one! Healthy is the way to go. Lots of fresh fruit and veg, lean protein. You'll know from experience what your danger foods are (and drinks!) As you go through the weeks you will feel fitter so hopefully you will want to give up the bad foods and switch completely to a healthier carry on. Chances are that you see your new shape emerging and you'll want to carry on feeling great. Hope so anyway.

The programme is fun! Make sure you enjoy yourself.Smile and go ......... You will find others here on the same week as you so you can compare notes. Let us know how you get on

Thanks for the support, when I say diets don't work I mean they don't work without the exercise. I've list weight on diets but always put it back on. I remember when I was younger and a good runner I could eat a huge amount and was as skinny as a rake so I'm hoping to jump into my time dilation device and get back there, loving this forum.

Find willpower! That's the great asset you can possess. You might have to dig deep to find it but believe me we all have it. I have lot a lot of weight and am keeping it off by eating healthily and running regularly. I had a bout of time off this year (most of it actually) due to an injury but managed to keep the lard at bay by sticking to healthy eating. You just have to be a sticker. Never a quitter. It's hard sometimes - at first - but you soon get into the habit of it so that it becomes second nature and you won't ever want to go back to how things were. I hope so anyway. If at any time you feel you don't want to turn out and run just go anyway. It's so much easier to run than have an internal argument with yourself about it. Once you get out there you'll be glad you did. Just go slowly. Steady is the way to do this

Good luck to you and your son. I actually think you have to run long distances to lose weight but the overall benefits are undeniable. Do encourage your son. Most of us on here wish we had started this years ago!

Well done for starting, that's the hardest bit done. I hope you continue to do the programme with your son. The benefits are enormous. Stick, stick, stick with it! It works x :-)

Even if you didn't lose a single kilo, you are doing your health a big favour by getting active.

Yes Paul, do it! It's great for controlling the weight, excercise is the key, as I've found, but I think you know that already don't you, I do watch the fats & sugars & of course the booze still, but can still have the treats at times. It's all about discipline, which you should be able to muster being in the army..both of you on it together would be great motivation. So good luck and HNY...

Brilliant, well done both of you. Hang in there and you will do it. I started running with my son just over 2 years ago... I was 43 and he was 12. I bribed him. He has gone from strength to strength and is now focussed on triathlons and I'm focussed on my running ( slowly!!!). I think it's the best thing we can do for our kids and good luck to you both, and most of all enjoy it 😎

Welcome Paul :) If you are in week5, you're doing great. Hope Jordan finds his way back in. New Year's always a good time for getting motivated. I think it is great that you've been running together. I wanted my 15 year old to run with me but she absolutely wasn't interested. She's impressed I've stuck with it to w8 though and maybe one day she'll come round.

Welcome aboard Paul, you're definitely in the right place ! Keep at it, the dividends are immense and well worth it .

You will have determination and mental strength by the bucketload being a veteran , and that will come to the fore in this programme .

I hope your son sees how well you are doing and is motivated to get back on track.

Good Luck and keep posting as it really helps in keeping you focused and motivated .

Happy New Year ! Xxx
