DISASTER!!! π’ I feel so disappointed, felt motivated to do the run and drove home from work ready for my first 30 minute run but alas 18 minutes in I lost my focus and took a walking water break for 60 seconds then tried to start running again but just couldn't do it.
I know any run is better than no run but feel by week 9 I should be over this and able to sustain my running. Anyone else had this problem?
I graduated last August and still do regular walk-runs or have unexpected walk breaks in the middle of a 30 minute run. Don't beat yourself up about it. Remember yourself 9 or so weeks ago? You're doing great. Next run will go better.
I definitely have runs where it all goes a bit wrong. Sometimes you can pin it down to a reason, others seem random. Usually it's a bit of tiredness, dehydration, starting too fast - windy weather!
Try not over think it just make sure you drunk, plenty, and are well rested etc before your next try so the gremlins can't take hold! Good luck, let us know how it goes.
I've been amazed by the mental aspect of running. By week 9 I was fit enough to do the runs (and had one Parkrun under my belt so knew I could do it) but my brain kept trying to tell my body to stop or that I couldn't do it.
But you are at week 9, so you can do it, and if a run ends badly - well at least you got out there in the first place, get out and try again next time. For some reason, given identical prep and conditions some days just seem harder than others, but you can do it!
I agree that the mental aspect of running often takes over. Brains can be quite naughty, they tell us things and we believe them - it's too hard, my legs feel too heavy to go any further etc. I found W9R1 quite hard, I wanted to stop after 5, 10 and 25 mins but persuaded myself to plod on as I knew if I stopped I wouldn't get going again. W9R3 was a doddle, I gave it my all, flew round the fields like greased lightning but this was because psychologically I thought this was my last run! Did 30 mins as a graduate on Monday and run felt hard again! I promise you can do this, just keep pace calm, think of your goal and don't beat yourself up. Good luck
We all have bad run days, on Monday, I hated every second and crawled round but today felt amazing. Just take a rest and try again, you can do it but just need good timing and you will b away! That is the nature of running - good and not so good runs but every run is more minutes getting fitter, even half a run is better than none
I agree with everyone's comments. Sometimes it's a case of mind over matter. Your body say's one thing but your mind is thinking something completely different. Put it down to experience and look forward to your next run with positivity, keep going your so close !
Laura brain washes us to believe we must keep running with no breaks ever, but if you read posts here you will find many people (Bazza TurnTurtle and Realfoodieclub to name just a few) who swear by the run/walk method. Any way that suits you is fine..
I didn't manage to complete all of week 9, run 3. I was gutted, but reminded myself this had happened a couple of times before, and probably I'd over psyched myself with this as the big one, and then went back two days later and completed it. Don't worry, I think this happens to all (or at least most) of us at some point. When you feel ready just give it another go.
Oh and I'm not sure there is actually a *should* , I watch a lot of professional football, and I know they know how to complete a pass, but sometimes they don't, happens to everyone I think!!!
Don't be too hard on yourself! Everyone has bad runs. I graduated last year and have been a bit stop-start since then for various reasons but I still get out and jog-with-the-dog, even when my fitness has dropped and I can't run non-stop. You know you can run for 28 minutes so the extra 2 minutes will be fine next time, I'm sure. Everyone's allowed off days.
As many people have already said, we all have bad days.
You know you can do this because you were running 28 minutes all of last week so 30 is virtually no different. As you say, any run is better than no run and next time you will be one run fitter.
I wonder whether you were so keen that you started too fast? Make a real effort to stat your next run slowly and tell yourself that you have been doing this all last week so this run is just the same. If you have energy at the end, you can always up the pace for the last few minutes.
Don't worry about it - get back out there in a day or so and you'll nail it.
Think you might be right with the pace, as my confidence was high I may have gone a bit quicker than normal
You could try just slowing right down if you feel like that again, for 60 secs, even if it feels like you are at walking place least you're still jogging, get your breathing etc sorted & slowly increase again.
Whenever I'm running I quite frequently stop for a few seconds to walk round dogs. On longer runs I stop to drink water or eat gels (yuck), again I don't mind the walking, but hate the interruption. The worst thing is trying to start again when your legs are aching. It certainly gives your body, and especially your breathing, a break.
I would hardly call it a disaster! If nothing else, could you have ran 18 minutes straight even 4 weeks ago? I know we sometimes get disappointed, but running is hard. If it wasn't hard then everyone would do it. I am on Week 7 Run 2. I tried it last night on the treadmill. I hate the treadmill, dread the dreadmill, and had no intention of being able to run for 25 minutes on the darn thing. But what I did do was run for a straight 8 minutes on a piece of machine I despise. I am sure it is going to be a long hard winter and I will eventually have to make friends with the treadmill.... maybe? When I started this there is no way I could have even done that. I ran walked the rest of it, and I let go of the guilt because I know the treadmill and I will never have a positive relationship. The important thing is you were out there trying, and I'm sure after a rest you will finish that run!
